Mount Airy merchants showcase a semi annual Dollar Day event with hundreds of sale items across town. Shoppers are urged to spend the weekend browsing air conditioned stores, meeting friends, and enjoying lunch and cinema as stores extend values through Friday Saturday and into Monday.
Mount Airy youths continue a scrap drive under the local salvage committee led by E. W. Paddison and A. B. Carter. They report 14000 pounds of iron and steel gathered so far and urge residents with scrap to call telephone number 13 for pickup.
A number of Surry County men depart this week to help save and cure the Canadian tobacco crop. Each man must show birth certificates and identify himself to cross the border and to reenter the United States after the season ends.
A box containing a pair of nice baby shoes was found in the city hall court room by rationing board clerks handling sugar certificates. The finder suspects a woman visiting for sugar canning. The owner may claim the shoes by inquiring at the court room.
Mrs. Lodomia Carter 91 widow of Harden F. Carter died at a son’s home near State Road after a broken hip from a fall last May. She joined Shola Baptist Church 71 years ago and remained faithful. Married in 1871, she left 11 children, 46 grandchildren, 64 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. She was grandmother to Mrs. J. H. Midkiff of Mount Airy and to Mrs. E. J. France Jr.’s two children.
The annual Surry County singing convention takes place in Dobson on Sunday August 30 with an afternoon program.
Eighteen men from Mount Airy and nearby areas joined the Navy at Salisbury in July. Piedmont North Carolina ranked second nationwide for July recruits, with Salisbury sailors likely the largest per population. Chief Petty Officer Arthur Sides will visit Mount Airy on August 24 and 31 to accept enlistment candidates aged 17 to 50 with required consents and releases.
Mr and Mrs J W Hylton were notified of their son James W Hylton Jr being promoted to Staff Sergeant with his company. He trained at Port Benning and was told he was not on the transport plane from a convoy wreck en route to Camp Edwards Massachusetts after Fort Benning transfer.
Mrs Zeb Hatcher spends the weekend at home hosting Mrs Sue Odum of Spartanburg South Carolina a college chum who enjoyed a happy reunion at Boone after years apart.
A drive to honor Col Haynes by funding a bomber for his use in China relief launches in Mount Airy and across North Carolina. Kiwanis Club leaders Mayor John D Thompson and W E Woodruff organized the effort with August 28 29 as statewide fundraising days to aid bombing operations of the United Nations in China and aid civilians.
Pvt Wilfred R Johnson graduates from Chanute Field under the Air Force Technical Training Command. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas W Johnson of Mount Airy. Training covered diverse technical operations essential to maintaining the nation's fighting planes.
Sugar stamp No 8 for consumers will allow 5 pounds of sugar to be purchased during the 1st week period from August 23 to October 31. Individual monthly allowance remains 5 pounds but stamp value increases to reduce intervals and ease merchant bookkeeping. Merchants gain ability to sell 5 10 and 25 pound packages.
J. G. Greenwood, commander of the local American Legion Post, announces a campaign to collect old phonograph records for soldiers at fronts. Leave records at the fire house. goal is 5,000. National musical leaders Kay Kyser Kate Smith and Gene Autry support the drive amid widespread need for records for talking machines at outposts.
Alton Westmoreland and his two daughters aged 8 and 9 travel to Tucson Arizona to join his wife and their 10 year old son who have been there for about three months. He drives his car with a trailer load of belongings and plans to set a new home for health reasons. He worked fifteen years as a mechanic at Renfro Hosiery Mills before relocating.
John G. Liewellyn assistant clerk of the Court and Glenn Comer of Dobson left Thursday for Norfolk Virginia to enlist in the U S Marines. They hoped to be accepted and planned to sell Liewellyn's car to a second hand dealer in Norfolk to finance the trip.
The Oxford Orphanage choir will hold a concert at Rockford Street auditorium on Friday night August 28 at eight o’clock. The annual visit to Mount Airy is under the auspices of the Masonic lodge. Committee members are C. Binder chairman A B Macon and W T Allred.
Mrs John Wolfe travels to Baltimore Maryland to secure a defense position near her husband who is training at Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland.
J D Sargent returned from Morehead City with transfer plans for his cruiser Southwind II to the United States Coast Guard. The 50 foot trim vessel will patrol coastal waters for submarines and hostile craft and was officially taken over on August 12.
U S Department of Agriculture notes South Carolina flue cured tobacco prices steady to slightly higher from Friday. Leaf and lugs show strongest demand with price gains of 1 to 2 dollars per hundred for most grades as sales were described as extreme.
Mr Samuel Hollingsworth of Arlington Virginia spent the past week in the capital area for undisclosed reasons and was seen visiting local landmarks.
The A A A office and field staff are preparing tobacco marketing sales cards for farmers in the county with a target delivery date of September 1. Farms must be inspected before a card is issued, with about 80 percent checked so far. Farmers not selling until markets open should avoid requesting cards before September 1, as gas and tire rationing necessitate mailing cards on written request.
Lieut. Catherine Rosemary Belton, daughter of Mr and Mrs Cleve Belton of Norfolk Virginia, recently of Mount Airy, becomes the first Mount Airy girl to go overseas as a nurse since the war began. She trained at Sibley Memorial Hospital and joined the U S Army Nursing Corps, serving at Scott and Chanute Fields before sailing for foreign duty. In a July letter she described a beautiful but unfamiliar posting with heat, natives, and a new money system.
A large draft list from Mount Airy reveals the names of men bound for army camp in a few days. Married status appears on the roster, indicating support for dependents. The release follows local draft board procedures and marks one of the community’s sizable mobilizations.
Pvt Monroe Doby has arrived at Camp Polk Louisiana for duty with the 11th armored division. He is assigned to Headquarters Company first Armored Division and is the son of Mr and Mrs Jim Doby of Lowgap.
The office of price administration halts civilian sales of 1943 Ford Chevrolet and Plymouth four door hard top sedans with under 1000 miles. The freeze lasts until October 31 or until army and navy needs are met. Other models remain available under rationing. Army navy need for four door models is about 28,000 with 12,562 in the government pool and 18,500 in non pool supply.
Mrs Margaret Richardson of Durham visits her father Mr Joe Sparger and other relatives in this area, sharing time with family members during a likely brief stay.
Mr and Mrs Ted Robertson and Mrs W W Burke will move into the W W Burke home on Pine street within two weeks. Mrs Lon Folger and family move from Pine street to Llewellyn apartments on Franklin street this week. Mrs Zeb Hatcher and family depart Rosendal on Moore avenue for the Carter apartments on Church street. Rosendal residence to be occupied by Mr Gaddy and family of Raleigh. Mr Grady will be principal.
Cadet James G. Harrison Jr. achieved an A average in the second semester of 1941-42 at The Citadel. He is among a select group earning gold stars for top scholastic performance. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J Harrison of this city.
On Sunday August 23 Mount Herman Methodist Church on Route 2 will dedicate its fourth building. Rev A Gibbs district superintendent will lead a cornerstone laying and home coming with the third quarterly conference and a Lewis family reunion.
