Boy Burned Exploding Shell Injures 11-Year-Old Venable
Ted Venable, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Venable of route 4, suffered severe facial burns after he exploded a gun shell Saturday. Eyelashes and eyebrows were burned off, hair singed, eyes swollen but sight likely intact after medical aid in town.

Death of Jack Hodge in Martin Memorial Hospital
Jack Blackburn Hodge aged 18 son of Mr and Mrs D S Hodge died Wednesday afternoon at Martin Memorial Hospital after a two week illness from an appendectomy and subsequent complications. A city high school graduate he worked with B and H Service Station and was active in Presbyterian Church. Funeral at three Friday at the Presbyterian Church with interment in Oakdale cemetery. He is survived by his parents a brother and a sister.

Kiwanis Back Movement for Government Hospital
At a Kiwanis Club meeting last Friday night the group backed a drive to establish a government hospital in or near the city. J. B. Sparger was named committee chairman to coordinate with Geo. W. Sparger and others who have spoken with authorities. A recent Congress bill would authorize a soldiers hospital in the South with a first unit costing at least two million dollars. City officials would offer watershed land as a site, to be sold at nominal public auction and then transferred to hospital authorities. Locals in close contact say Mount Airy has a good chance of securing the facility.

Avan Brannock 18 year old son of F M Brannock now in the US marine service will arrive at Hampton Roads Virginia next week from Haiti where stationed for months. His parents Mr and Mrs Brannock will travel to Morehead City Sunday to meet him. They will be joined by Miss Ada Beasley. The party will return to the city Friday with Avan after his 30 day furlough.

John Davis and Joe Vaughn are jailed in Hillsville on a serious charge as Edwards fights for recovery. All involved reportedly had been drinking after a weekend gathering.

Andy Williams 25 of Lambsburg Virginia died at High Point hospital after being struck by a car seven miles south of Asheboro. Driver Jim Rollins held on manslaughter charges as Randolph County and State patrol investigate. Williams survived by wife and five children, father W H Williams and four sisters and three brothers.

Local Ararat river stilling outfit uncovered by deputy sheriff
Deputy Sheriff J. H. Allred discovered a hidden still site carved into a bluff near a mountain spring by the Ararat river. He destroyed the setup and seized 200 gallons of beer and 12 jars of liquor hidden along a log. Officials believe the liquor was high quality and the operator used traditional methods.

Work to replace pavement on Main Street as gas mains are laid continues rapidly. Drilling nears completion on the 14 miles of trench while lateral lines are installed. A gas station on Galloway Street sees concrete foundations poured for heavy storage tanks as the project stays ahead of schedule.
