Lewis J. Gardner 23 of Mount Airy Route 6 Mount Carmel Baptist Church area died at Baptist Hospital Winston-Salem from self inflicted pistol wounds. He was found at his mother's home three miles north of Mount Airy off Highway 62 after being last seen Tuesday July 31. coroner ruled death by own action. He was born May 1 1938 in Floyd County Virginia son of Harley and Hattie Sutphin Gardner. Surviving relatives listed.

Gardner Family Rites Held at Mount Carmel Church
Funeral services were held at Mount Carmel Baptist Church for Layton Gardner and Giles Gardner both of Mount Airy with Route addresses and for Mrs Ofra Seekest of Mount Airy Route 5 and Mrs Verlin Dixon of Winston-Salem. Harrell Reports Teens Steal Peaches and Melons
Ernest Harrell told police Monday morning two boys stole 20 bushels of peaches and five watermelons from his Highway 52 fruit stand north of Mount Airy. He caught them after several trips, then let them go while he went to the state line to call officers at 5 30 a.m. He obtained the license number and can identify the youths. sheriff’s department investigates.

Sam D. Smith 73 retired farmer of the Ararat Virginia area died unexpectedly at home Thursday morning after months of declining health. Born October 17 1882 in Surry County he was the son of Lazarus and Lydia Smith. Survivors include wife Victoria Bowman two sons Jesse and Merritt of Mount Airy a daughter Mary Lillian Easter four grandchildren one brother Lazarus Smith and a sister Mrs James Gunnell. Funeral services were held Saturday at Doe Run Baptist Church with burial at Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers included Ed Scales Guy Bowman Dewey Howman Tom Young Jamey Payne and George.
