Surry Man Joins Nevada Nuclear Test Plumbbob Operations
Airman First Class Claude A. Hicks of Mount Airy and Dobson, son and husband, participates in Operation Plumbbob at the Nevada Test Site. He serves as crew chief and flight engineer in USAF C-119 support out of Kirtland AFB, with duties including daily shuttle runs to Indian Springs AFB. Hicks returns to Pope AFB after duty, and his Air Force career began in 1952 with later education at Chanute and Shepard.

Severe Sunday Storm Hits Mount Airy Area
A lightning storm struck Mount Airy causing fires in a North South Street home and damage to trees along Mitchell Street and East Oak Street. 40 minutes of heavy rain produced .93 inches, with street flooding and a broken water main. Power and telephone lines suffered, a transformer was damaged, and TV aerials fell. Local residents recall it as the worst storm in years.

Surry Native Major Gene Riddle Retires After 20 Years
Major Gene C. Riddle of the United States Air Force, a Mount Airy native and 1935 graduate, retires at Barksdale AFB Louisiana after two decades of service. He served with the Irish Bomb Wing in Hawaii on Pearl Harbor Day, flew B-47s, and earned his wings in 1943. He and wife Gladys Woodward of Statesville have a son, Harold. Plans include returning to Tampa for commercial art training and a possible advertising career.

Ike Slate 56 of Claudville Va died at a Martinsville hospital after a week’s illness. Born April 6 1901 in Patrick County he was the son of Bandy and Rebecca Bowman Slate. Survivors include a son Thomas J Slate of Claudville a daughter Mrs David Goins of Reidsville and others. Services were held at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church with burial following.

Mount Airy police report a 1950 Mercury driven by Jess Andrew Norman failed to stop on South Street at Virginia Street, rear ending a 1957 Ford driven by Brady Bennett. Bennett’s car struck Walter Shuff’s, causing $150, $400 and $300 damage to each, respectively. Norman charged with reckless driving. no injuries reported.

Surry Bus Driver Training Starts Wednesday in Dobson
A driver training school for Surry County school bus drivers opens Wednesday in Dobson with classes at 8:00 a.m. at Dobson High School. Army Specialist Third Class Charles D. Owens of Westfield earned a Non Commissioned Officer Academy diploma in Germany.
