Three Die In Cana Virginia Area Highway Crash
Police investigated a head on collision on Highway 52 near Cana three miles north of the Virginia North Carolina line. A tractor trailer loaded with cabbage and an oil tanker collided. Leonard Melton and Leonard Ayers, both 20, of Fancy Gap were killed in the tractor trailer. Thomas Calvin Graham Jr., 27, of Winston-Salem died later in Martin Memorial Hospital after suffering extensive burns. A dog survived.

Funeral Services Follow Fatal Car Wreck in North Carolina
Survivors from a fiery crash were identified as Melton Ayers and Graham. Bodies were moved to Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy after extrication. Melton had services at Independence School in Carroll County. Ayers buried at Elkspur Church Cemetery with services at Elkspur Christian Church. Graham's services were in Winston Salem with burial at Forsyth Memorial Park. he was married to Nancy Stanley.

Phone Rates Boost Granted for North Carolina firm
The North Carolina Utilities Commission announced boosts for Central Telephone Company of Mount Airy raising gross revenues by about 118500 dollars annually. Rates will rise with the next bill in Mount Airy and towns including Boonville Yadkinville Dobson North Wilkesboro Elkin West End Biscoe Ramseur and more. The commission cited an urgent need for higher gross revenue noting last year earnings at 3.29 percent would rise to about 5.87 percent under the new rates.

Alonzo L. Lon Shelton 73 of Mount Airy died about 8 30 a m Sunday while visiting his sister near Francisco. Born June 18 1877 in Stokes County he worked over 30 years for National Furniture Co. He retired for health reasons and was a Central Methodist Church member. Survivors include wife Ruth Lathan two sisters and two brothers. Funeral at Junction Street home Tuesday at 2 pm with burial in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed.

Charlie Melton was fined 25 dollars plus costs after being found guilty in Hillsville Trial Justice Court of poisoning dogs owned by J. P. Meredith. Three Meredith hounds died June 30 during a fox hunt near Melton’s home. a veterinary report confirmed strychnine poisoning. Meredith also reported four more valuable hounds missing the same night. Evidence showed Lamm Drug Co sold one eighth ounce of strychnine to C. J. Melton of Fancy Gap.
