Surry County Schools Set to Open on September 6
Surry County will begin the 1955-56 term Tuesday September 6 under Supt. J. Sam Gentry. All county schools will run a uniform schedule with holidays including Thanksgiving Easter and Christmas. Preliminary plans for a Ridge Weetfield elementary with four classrooms and a cafeteria were approved, targetting completion for 1956-57 and funded largely by state bonds, reducing costs by about 65000.

Community hospital fund nears goal in Carroll County
With three days left for a $100 000 goal the Carroll County Virginia hospital drive has raised $29 279 from 740 pledge cards. Organizations and towns across Virginia and North Carolina including Cleveland Ohio Mount Airy Dobson Burlington Wytheville Austinville and Salem are contributing and county groups have approved pledges of 500 and 200 respectively.

House Destroyed In Saturday Fire On Low Gap Road
A five room frame house on old Lowgap Road near Mount Airy was destroyed by fire Saturday night around 10. Residents were the Everett Campbell family, and the home belonged to the J. D. Smith estate. Firemen saved the neighboring Bill Hall house and kept two other nearby homes from burning.

Single Arrest For One Drunk In Elkin Court
Judge R. S. Westmoreland in Recorder's Court at Elkin consolidated two drunkenness charges against J W Ashburn of Yadkinville for July 22 and 23 into one case. The judge criticized the idea of a second arrest for the same drunkenness and fined Ashburn $10 with court costs after Police Chief Corbett Wall noted it was the same drunken incident.

Brintle Serves Aboard USS Wandank On Kauai Visit
Blaine N Brintle a metalemitic second class USN son of Mr and Mrs Jacob S Brintle Mount Airy Route 2 is serving aboard the ocean going tug USS Wandank The Wandank made a four day visit early in July to the Hawaiian island Kauai The ship was overhauled at Pearl Harbor and conducted a 200 mile refresher training cruise with drills in gunnery engineering signalling and damage control.

Family of Mount Airy residents injured in Sunday crash near Pinnacle
Three Mount Airy residents and four others were hurt when a car went out of control on Highway 62 near Pinnacle a mile north of town. The Martin family and five others were hospitalized. Mrs. Annie Mae Martin suffered severe injuries. The other vehicle’s occupants, all from Winston-Salem and Walkertown, were not reported critically injured. Authorities said speed and reckless driving contributed and no charges were filed yet. The King Fire Department responded, marking its first call.
