Merchants in Mount Airy plan further tobacco market promotion after a successful meeting. A $250 fund was raised, with a drive for more funds to follow. They target 5,000,000 pounds to be sold this season, citing 3,483,072 pounds sold last year for $861,596.60 and 2,500,000 pounds for $961,483.50 in 1933. An Executive Committee for Tobacco Market Promotion was named and will meet to appoint subcommittees for advertising, billboards, and other efforts to boost the local market.

Rites Held For Car Wreck Victim Joe Bell
Funeral services were held at Siloam Baptist Church for 16 year old Joe Bell who died when the car he rode in overturned north of Stony Knoll Saturday night. Driver Ernest Posey was injured and recovering at Martin Memorial Hospital. The four boys had returned from an ice cream social when the wreck occurred. No charges were filed.

Two Hurt In Wreck At Willow Street Sunday Night
Moody Gunnell and Bernice Childress were injured in a two car collision at the Rawley Avenue Willow Street intersection Sunday night about 8 o clock. Gunnell suffered broken ribs and head injuries while Childress had head cuts and contusions. Both cars were badly damaged and Hyatt Harrell and Gunnell were ejected from their vehicle.

Country Loses Several Widely Known Citizens

Shooting Affray at Black Cat Filling Station
Bryan McMillian, 23, of Virginia, was shot in a late night brawl at the Black Cat Filling Station near here and is recovering at Martin Memorial Hospital. Hoke Smith, the station owner, said he struck Hermit Smith with a pistol. a shot fired, grazing Hermit Smith and passing through McMillian. Sheriff’s investigation supported Smith’s account. Smith is bonded at $500.
