Mount Airy officials announce a safety program for elementary pupils. Police will use a four light intersection device and a large highway sign board to explain crossing rules. Officers will visit classrooms and start instruction this week with local sponsors supporting the effort.
James Walker of Mount Airy owned his automobile and drove it toward the fire department on Moore Avenue Saturday night to ask firefighters to extinguish a blaze in the front seat. Fireman Billy Joe Woodruff sprayed water on the seat. Police next door identified Johnston and noted his license was revoked. Chief Monte Boone confronted him as he backed the car toward City Hall and he resisted, injuring the chief slightly. Johnston, 24, remained in custody in default of bond.
Mount Airy man Walker James Lewis received two traffic charges in one morning for driving with a revoked license. First cited by State Highway Patrolman Josh Howell before 2 a.m., Lewis had an expired license since January. Minutes later Mount Airy police officers arrested him again and set a $200 bond for May 13 before Judge R. Westmoreland.
Surry County Register of Deeds announced that county beer and wine licenses are due today. The notice notes that license holders must renew by the specified deadline and references any required superseded approvals.
Census data show Mount Airy increased by 1 249 residents from 1880 to 1890, marking the largest ten year growth. City engineer F G Doggett obtained the figures with help from Congressman Ralph J Scott, based on Bureau of Census records starting 1880.
Jesse R. James, Burlington chief of police, will be guest speaker at the Jaycees gathering Thursday at 6 30 p m at Reeves YMCA announced by president Vance Cox. James earned a master's from Eastern Carolina Teachers College and served with the State Bureau of Investigation and, during the war, as a criminal investigator with the provost marshal and military intelligence in Honolulu.
The NEWS reports Mount Airy textile employee Raymond Patterson is considering filing for mayor after being approached by many citizens. Patterson is the son of former Sheriff Sam Patterson and is active in the Mount Airy community.
Mrs Nancy Snow Surratt 82 of Mount Airy died at Northern Surry Hospital after a week long illness. Survived by son John and four daughters, plus siblings. Funeral 3 p.m. Saturday at Highland Park Baptist Church. burial in Surratt family cemetery.
Police lift the ban on parking in front of G. C. Levill Company declaring the space open to the public. The area, previously a loading zone for out of town merchandise, now serves as a regular parking spot in the business district.
Billy Ray Barker 24 of Mount Airy route 1 sustained minor injuries Friday night after his car left Springs Road about 12:30 a.m. He fell asleep at the wheel, struck a bank, and was thrown from the vehicle into a ditch. He was treated at the hospital for a cut lip and several broken teeth. He was alone in the car.
The Mount Airy finals of the 17th Journal and Sentinel WSJS Spelling Bee were held at 9 30 a m in Rockford Street School auditorium. Contestants included Nancy Beasley Frances Shelton Rodney Frye and Carolyn Simmons the winner and state contestant to be held in Winston Salem on May 11 televised at 1 p m.
Mrs Brooksey Crutchfield Southard widow of Wilson Southard died at 11 a m Sunday at the home of her daughter Mrs Martha Kimmer Yadkinville route 3 after several weeks illness Surviving daughter is Mrs H G Hazelwood of Dobson Born in Yadkin County August 25 1863 she lived in Surry County and later moved to Liberty Baptist Church community eight years ago Her husband died in 1932 Funeral services were held at 2 p m today at North Oak Ridge Baptist Church with Rev Harold Parker officiating Burial followed in the church cemetery
Located in Korea Pte. James M. Dunlain brother of Mrs. Robert Spraker 719 Maiden Lane Mount Airy is a member of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. Dunlain entered the Army in July 1955 and received basic training at Fort Bliss Texas. He is a driver in Battery C of the division's 48th Field Artillery Battalion.
The First Baptist Church organizing a public library led by Rev. Preston Taylor and Miss Addie Mae Cooke with Mrs. Kester Sink as library chairman. 237 books processed so far with plans to reach 4 000 to 5 000 volumes, focusing on religion and life for all ages.
Fleming Clyde Lowe 67 a retired farmer of Lowgap died of a heart attack at home Saturday. He was born in Surry County July 21 1889 and survived by wife son daughter stepchildren mother siblings and grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Fisher's Gap Primitive Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. In a separate wreck at the Toast highway rail road crossing Mr and Mrs Hauser of Bannertown escaped serious injuries when a Plymouth sedan struck their pickup. Their sons were uninjured. Lineberry 21 of Fries faces charges of intoxicated driving and reckless operation.
The Mount Airy School of Beauty Culture on Moore Avenue is now owned and managed by Thelma Crawford Hair a registered cosmetologist. Former owner Alice Fochtman plans a Roanoke school while Ruby McDaniel remains as instructor as remodeling and air conditioning are completed.
Paul King a Mount Airy National Guardsman remains in Baptist Hospital Winston-Salem after a tractor accident at the site of the new Guard Armory on Way 52. He is shown with his arm tied to support over his bed.
Clyde Jurney 38 and sister Mrs Jettie Jurney Martin 58 of Wilmington Del are hospitalized near Richmond Va with injuries from a 3 am wreck on the highway. Jurney suffered broken ribs and a broken shoulder while Mrs Martin needed over 50 stitches. Other occupants Dale and Jerry Jurney were uninjured. The party had left Mount Airy to return home after attending a funeral.
Hypnotist Dr Morton Greene will drive a car blindfolded through Mount Airy downtown at 1 p m Friday as part of the Hypnotic Marvels show sponsored by the American Legion at Rockford Street. The stunt, performed under police supervision, precedes an 8 p m stage appearance.
Mr and Mrs Wallace R Winkler of Washington DC were weekend guests of Mrs Winkler.
William Andrew Joyce aged 70 died suddenly Monday morning at his home in the Asbury community near this city from a heart attack. He leaves his wife Blanche Rogers Joyce four sons Reid Joyce Lloyd Joyce Wayne Joyce Oliver Joyce one daughter Mrs C C Lawson one brother Richard Joyce and four sisters. Funeral at 2 pm Wednesday at Asbury Presbyterian Church with burial in the church cemetery. Body returned today from Jones Funeral Home.
Pilot Mountain and Westfield school districts will vote on a 10 cent per $100 property tax supplement, said Joe Pell Jr, chairman of the Surry County Board of Education. The measure funds teachers and classroom needs to maintain standards.
Mrs Sumner returns home after several weeks of treatment at Winston-Salem hospital. Her condition is reported improved and she is resting on Wilson Street Saturday.
