Edward L Patterson 61 prominent Mount Airy resident died Monday night following a long illness. He served as local railroad agent, Mount Airy police chief, tax lister, Calvary Baptist Sunday School superintendent and long time Franklin school board member. He is survived by three sons and four daughters plus siblings and grandchildren. Funeral was held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel.

Robert Martin Thomas 66 died at his home four miles north of Mount Airy at 6 a m Monday after Sundays stroke. Born in Carroll County Virginia he was the son of William and Serena Fleming Thomas. Funeral services were held at 2 p m Wednesday at Salem Methodist Church conducted by Rev Gran Gwyn with burial in the church cemetery. Survived by widow Mrs Thomas, Reuben Thomas of Mesa Washington five daughters Magdalene and Jacqueline Thomas Mrs Ben Coe Mrs Ed Smith and Mrs Claude Chandler all of Mount Airy 16 grandchildren six brothers and four sisters.

Patrolman Jones Arrests Notorious Operator Wallace Held on Bond
Howard Thomas Wallace, 34, was held on 25000 bond in Surry County after Tuesday arrest by state trooper and license examiner. He faces three robbery charges in Birmingham and is wanted in Indianapolis and Cairo for related crimes. Federal officials plan to deliver him to Greensboro for Birmingham authorities. Police say Wallace fled to avoid prosecution and had no prior criminal record since 1926.

Residents in Plat Rock section near Mount Airy report a perplexing death after the body of Ballard Carter, a well known Black resident who was disabled and struggled with mobility, was found hanging from a 35 foot possum pine tree. Authorities say the man tied a knot before ending his life and the circumstances remain unclear.

Death by own action in Toast community hangs noted
Coroner John L. Wolta said Carter likely died Saturday night by suicide after a family dispute. Witnesses saw him with a rope at a Toast filling station where a sack allegedly carried the rope. Carter left home Saturday noon for Payetteville saying he would visit a daughter. he told his wife to proceed with selling the pig if he did not return. Otis Beverly of Mikiff's Hardware reported selling Carter a rope Saturday afternoon.

Billy Campbell six year old son of Mr and Mrs W A Campbell of Mitchell Street was injured in a street accident on Lebanon Street Monday at 9 50 PM He ran in front of a truck driven by Willie Andrew Martin of Cana Virginia The truck was going about 15 miles per hour Police said the incident was unavoidable Mr Martin suffered no damages and Campbell was hospitalized at Martin Memorial Hospital with head injuries.

Joseph H Pulton a 94 year old Mount Airy pioneer died at his South Main Street home last Sunday. Born October 14 1853 he built a tobacco plant and owned valuable property later sold to the Bank of Mount Airy. He helped bring the railroad to town and advised on rail development. Funeral services were held at his home with ministers officiating. Survived by Grady H Palton and Joseph W Jack Pulton and three daughters Mrs E H Wrenn Jr Mrs R L Norwood and Miss Margaret Pulton and six grandchildren.
