The ninth grade chorus directed by Dr. Libby Crabbel performs Thursday at 7:30 pm in Mount Airy High School Auditorium, paired with the Junior High Band. The program includes works by Bach Morley Handel Britten and others and features a photo of chorus members.
Robert W. Tyndall, Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. Washington manager and Mount Airy native, elected vice president. He joined Wachovia in 1961, held roles in Winston-Salem, Washington and Greenville, earned a Duke BA in 1969, and serves in local civic and church posts. He is married to Liew Baucom with daughter Kimberly Ann, age 3.
Mount Airy Police Department warns merchants and the public about counterfeit twenty dollar bills circulating in the area. Some local stores have accepted the notes described with serial PaG448711A and other identifying marks. Citizens urged to verify all twenty dollar bills and report suspected cases to police.
Surry County deputies investigate weekend thefts at Surry County Car Service on US 52A and Atlantic Service Station in Bannertown. Items stolen include a watch, two rings, a safe, 14 car titles, a radio, insurance papers, a cigarette machine, and cigarettes. A radiator theft at a Mount Airy area home led to the arrest of Roger Dale Payne, 19, on larceny charges with a $500 bond.
Pilot Mountain police department fills vacancy after Edward Bean resigns. Gary Eugene Hudson, 25, a local resident, begins training under Police Chief Junior Falk and will join the four member force, restoring full strength.
Miller Engineering Co of Mount Airy was the apparent low bidder for a Burke County bridge over Warrior Fork Creek. The firm offered $72,729.64. The State Highway Commission will review bids next week before awarding the contract.
Two more candidates join Pilot Mountain spring races. Billy Brim files to run for commissioner against four rivals including J. R. Jessup and Katy Lynch Tuttle. Cy Nanny and John MacKenzie vie for mayor. Judge Richard W. Reid seeks another two year term. Filing closes noon Wednesday. election Tuesday May 6.
Deputies Davis and Hiatt spotted a red 1962 Chevrolet described in police radio and stopped it on South Street at 8 pm. Donald Hemp Rogers, 17, of High Paint, faced charges of hit and run driving and operating a car while intoxicated with liquor law violations tied to five other men. Jimmie Wayne York and four others faced unlawful liquor charges. York also held on weapon charges.
Victor Good of 108 Tesh Ave Mount Airy underwent open heart surgery at Baptist Hospital Winston-Salem. The procedure used several pints of blood from Red Cross bloodmobile drives. Mrs Goad issued thanks to county donors and Red Cross officials as he progresses in Intensive Care Unit. visitors not permitted.
Miss Silvio Rodriguez, a former Mount Airy resident and Mount Airy Senior High School graduate, assists in a Pfieffer College led weekly tutorial for area elementary children at the Misenheimer campus. Bill Tyson, former North Main School principal, serves as faculty adviser to the group.
H Marshall son of Mr and Mrs Henry G Marshall of White Plains route 7 has arrived in Dong Ha Vietnam. A 1968 North Surry High graduate he joined the Seabees in September and completed basic training at Gulfport Mississippi homeport of the Seabees.
Local officers investigated three break-ins over the weekend including a gun theft. Shirley Hughes 59 was arrested after dropping a 12 gauge shotgun at W E Merritt Hardware Co. on Main and Oak. Other break-ins at Raymonds Lunch and Deluxe Cleaners yielded little missing. A total of 31 arrests were recorded, with 14 for auto violations, 12 liquor violations, and 5 miscellaneous.
Horace Hord of Winston-Salem outlined pharmaceutical research progress and potential while speaking to the Northern Surry Hospital ladies auxiliary at the Reeves YMCA. He noted the high cost and long timeline for drug development and cited gains in vaccines antibiotics and birth defect and cancer research. He quoted that about three of four drugs in use today were unknown 15 years ago and warned drug research remains a high risk field with five plus years and millions needed to bring a drug to market.
A Slate family reunion is planned at Asbury Presbyterian Church this Sunday. Worship begins at 11 with a noon picnic, inviting all friends and relatives to attend.
Revival services are under way at Salem Fork Christian Church in Dobson with evening meetings through Friday at 7.36 pm. The speaker is Rev. B. Frank Leggett of First Christian Church Rocky Mount, a Milligan College and Texas Christian University graduate. The pastor Rev Will R. Wallace invites all to attend.
Hord argued that industry seeks to preserve progress incentives under the U S patent system. The meeting planned to install new auxiliary officers for the coming year after a dinner and lecture.
