A 67 year old Ohio woman, Mrs. Mattie Lee Whaley, died after a two car collision on US 601 near the Yadkin River bridge in Crutchfield, Surry County. Her husband, driver Willis Whaley, Sr., was treated for glass cuts. The couple were returning to Columbus, Ohio from South Carolina. This marked the county’s sixth road death this year, ahead of last year’s pace.

Fleeing Auto Ends In Wreck Against Tree
Larry Wayne Miller 22 of Lowgap was chased by Pilot Mountain police for speeding over 100 mph along US 52 then crashed the 1967 Plymouth into a tree near Holly Springs Road. He sustained only a lip cut and wore a seat belt. Miller faced charges of operating while intoxicated and police prepared warrants for speeding and failing to stop for a blue light.
