The board gave a unanimous vote to appoint John B. Wolfe of Oakdale Street. It also reappointed W. J. Monday of North Main Street and Roy Nelson of Korner Street to three year terms.
Raymond Hemrick, longtime Snappy Lunch partner and Central Methodist Church steward, announced candidacy for city commissioner in the upcoming Democratic primary on May 23. He has served 12 years in the Masonic Lodge and 21 years in his business.
Warren Love of Mount Airy a UNC ROTC senior and two friends found a Russian flag atop the campus mast during a 6:30 a.m. march to raise the American flag. They removed the Red Flag after about 30 minutes and raised the U S flag. The prank was linked to the Junius Scaies trial coverage.
Final plans and specifications for Surry County Northern Hospital Districts new 100 bed facility have been finished by architect George Watts Carr of Durham and turned over for approval to the Medical Care Commission and the U S Public Health Service. Board chairman Dr Moir S Martin expects swift federal and state approval with ground breaking possibly as early as June 15 after bids are sought and 30 days of notices published.
Seventy year old units? 61 soldiers out of 64 answered Operation Minuteman in Mount Airy testing National Guard strength. Guards posted at five bridges water tanks power substations telegraph offices and water plant with police mayor and reporters inspected posts. The alert ended at 10 30 PM and guards demanded official papers from all visitors at guard posts.
A Dobson School Board member urged change in Surry County education citing an outdated system. He cites the Mount Airy Better Schools Committee and calls for inspection of county facilities and curricula.
Wade Miller McGee 22 son of Mr and Mrs Walter McGee Route 3 Mount Airy won first prize in an annual speaking contest by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers at North Carolina State College Raleigh where he is a senior. His talk design of a torquemeter for measuring small torques earned him top honors and a third place cash award at the Charlottesville Virginia conference. He will present at Duke University and graduates from State College with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
Surry County officials and backers press to keep Bruce H. Tharrington as schools chief while a petition circulates among Democrats calling for two more school board members. Representative Joe R. Fowler Jr. signals possible action to support Tharrington amid board opposition and unclear petition backing. Ceol Ring defends his vote, citing independence in selecting the best choice.
W H Foy told The NEWS he would not be a candidate for reelection to the town commission. He said constituents asked him to run again but his business prevents it. He thanked supporters for their encouragement.
Rockford Street resident Hemrick announces candidacy for Ward No 2 commissioner. He pledges service over political aims and says he has no promises to make. In a city board recess, commissioners Poore and Beamer say they will run again. Beamer has 12 years on the board and Poore 10.
F. L. Johnson of West Elm Street donated six large English boxwoods to Mount Airy High School. Grown on his White Plains farm, the plants are more than 25 years old and were planted at the school grounds on Monday, marking one of the city’s largest beautification gifts.
Mount Airy residents were told by W J Monday that Prof L B Pendergraph would serve another two years as superintendent, but Monday later corrected the statement saying the board appointed him to a two year term with no retirement age limit. He praised Pendergraph for his work in schools and community leadership.
The 1956 56 Cooties officers were elected at the Cootie clubhouse in Veterans Memorial Park. Installation is set for Friday night April 20 at the Blue Vue Restaurant with a Dutch dinner.
Belk's Department Store in Mount Airy marks its 67th Founder's Day with a month long sale that began Thursday. The celebration honors William Henry Belk and features bargains highlighted across four pages of advertising in the newspaper's second section.
George N. Gilbert of Mount Airy arranged a job swap with Feris Delvaney for Sonny in Berkeley California after reading a trade journal. Delavaney, born in Jonesboro Tennessee, prefers living closer to home though California suits his duties in the post office department. Both men have similar years of service and salaries with department approval.
R T Moser 57 of Pilot Mountain Route 2 Shoals died Monday at home after two years of declining health and a week of serious illness. Born December 7, 1897, he was the son of Basil E. and Russie Moser. Survived by wife Althea Chilton. two sons Gerald of Siloam and Harold at home. two brothers A A Moser Winston-Salem and E H Moser Zebulon. four sisters Mrs J E Scott Mrs O K Snyder Mrs Oem Dunham. Funeral 3 pm Wednesday at Shoals Methodist Church with Rev J W Combs and Rev R BE Ward. Burial in church cemetery.
