McCraw Dies at 61 in Durham Longtime North Carolina Farmer
Green Nancy Beamer McCraw, 61, farmer of Mount Airy Route 6, died Friday at the Veterans Administration hospital in Durham after a period of illness. He was born February 22 1894 in Virginia, son of Green and Nancy Beamer McCraw. Survived by three sons Green ill, McCraw Jr., of the home. McCraw of Mount Airy. and another son. two daughters Mrs Ros Hawks and Mrs Geneva McSlate of Mount Airy. three brothers Hasten McCraw of Mount Airy Route 6. Henry and McCraw of Mount Airy. one sister Mrs Joe rd of Mount Airy Route 5. Funeral at Worth Methodist Church north of Mount Airy at 2:30 Sunday conducted by Rev Clyde Faul and Dev D D Hodges. Burial in church cemetery with Mount Airy Masonic No 322 in charge.

Man Falls Asleep Under Wheel Damaging Car
Isaac Frederick Riggs of Mount Airy Route 4 escaped injury early Tuesday when he fell asleep under the wheel of his 1958 Ford two door and ran off Haystack Road near Simmons' Service Station. Damages estimated at 300 dollars. He reported to the police at 12:45 am.

D G Witt Former Local Fire Chief Dies At 73
Daniel Geen Witt 73 of 126 Rawley Avenue died Saturday afternoon at Black Mountain Sanatorium after four years as a patient. He joined Mount Airy Fire Department in 1916, served 39 years and led as chief from 1941 to 1961. Survived by wife Mies Zula Brown Witt and children Charles, Robert, and Mrs. Gray Hennis, with services Monday at First Baptist Church. Burial at Oakdale Cemetery.

Surry County Begins Salk Polio Vaccination Drive
Health officials in Surry County start the mass first and second grade polio vaccination program using the Salk vaccine. 176 Franklin School students first in the county receive shots with 790 requests but 1900 doses available.
