Candidates lined up at the board of elections to pay filing fees for multiple offices before the noon deadline. Several immediately announced their candidacies while others awaited clearance and guidance on requirements.
The Surry County Unit of the American Cancer Society kicked off with a banquet at Kay's Starlite Restaurant. Harvey L. Sprinkle spoke on progress from funded research and ongoing patient service, while local officials and candidates filed for county offices in the election cycle. Busily, race filings covered sheriff, clerk of court, judges, and education posts as voters prepare for upcoming campaigns.
Mount Airy chamber committees plan a 30 day May clean up effort to improve the town. Downtown and development groups meet at Ray’s Star-Lite Restaurant to map painting signage shrub trimming and litter removal with business and oil stations pledging help. A fall follow up will award a station improvement prize while Adele at the high school offers student volunteers.
The Democrats named two incumbents for county commissioners, Whitener of State Road and Reeves of Pilot Mountain, but no candidate filed for the third seat. Whitener, veteran chair aiming for a fourth term, and Reeves, in his first full term, urge continued progress on education, roads, and industry. Rusty Foy未 announced candidacy.
Gray Nichols of route 7 Mount Airy filed Wednesday for the Surry County Board of Commissioners. He is the first Republican to announce intentions to run for the county political office.
Mount Airy bids farewell as Andy Griffiths plans move to California with his parents. The elder Griffiths will relocate near Los Angeles, easing care for Carl Griffiths who suffers asthma. The departure follows a long local ties including schooling under Ed Mickey and early musical beginnings.
Ray Haynes a four year farmer from Green Hill Road filed to run in the four county 27th District as a Democratic candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives. A World War II veteran he emphasizes the need for opposition and represents Tar Heel Chapter of the Bead Airborne Association and E Company Special Forces.
Mount Airy High's annual Career Day featured juniors and seniors learning about many fields. Rotary Club representative Robert Merritt spoke at the ceremony while students toured a day-in-the-life experience across professions including accounting aviation engineering journalism law medicine nursing teaching and more.
