Elijah Presented Here On Tuesday Night
Dr James H Edwards of Raleigh will star in Mendelssohns Elijah with the Mount Airy Operetta Club. Dr Clifford Barr directs the sacred oratorio with local members filling all other roles. The single public performance is at Rockford Street Auditorium April 19 at 8 pm, with a 1:30 pm matinee for high school students. Admission is free, a free will offering will defray expenses. The Mount Airy Ministerial Association collaborates on the production.

A stolen safe from Roberson's Store near Stuart was found with contents scattered one mile north of Arecat Virginia. The car used to move the safe, a 1941 DeGota owned by Ralph Edgar Whorton of Mount Airy, was found abandoned out of gas. The break in involved an axe from Ararat and 100 dollars in bills with 60 dollars in change missing. No arrests yet. Dr Gates Loses Meat. A pack house theft at Ararat yielded two middlings and four hams taken, later found scattered on the farm as dogs fed. The thieves fled after being scared away by Mrs Gates. One ham remains missing.

Polar Queen flies to North Pole in record distance flight
In Alaska, April years ago Adm. Peary took 38 days to reach the pole. Yesterday the B 29 Superfortress Polar Queen departed Eielson AFB and reached the pole in 7 hours 40 minutes covering 1420 miles. A flag was raised at 12 14 A M BST from the ice cap to mark the anniversary presented by the circumnavigators club of New York City.

Explosion injures three youths in Raleigh kitchen
A homemade gunpowder blast in a former Mount Airy man’s Raleigh kitchen during church hour injured three teenage boys. Howard Satterfield Jr 17 Benton Satterfield 13 and Health Pemberton were treated at Rex Hospital with Burns eye injuries and internal trauma. Doctors said full extent would take about 24 hours to determine. The blast occurred while the boys planned to blow up a tree near a camp on the Neuse River.

Assault Charge Brought On Bruce Peele, 22
Bruce Peele, 22, released on 400 bond after being charged with assault with a deadly weapon and non support. He allegedly entered his mother in law Grace Jones home and cut her throat with a knife. Jones hospitalized then released. Peele said to be drinking when the assault occurred. Constable Raymond Hanks and Deputy Roy Smith arrested him after a Monday night search.
