Mrs. Elma Gwyn Ashby Dies After Long Illness
Mrs. Elma Gwyn Ashby, 50, wife of R. E. Ashby of Idlewilde on the Pipers Gap road, died early Saturday after three years of ill health. She was daughter of the late Richard L. and Letitia Gwyn and lived most of her life at Idlewilde. Surviving are her husband, a daughter Letitia, son R. E. Ashby Jr., grandson R. E. Ashby II, brothers Joseph T. Gwyn and Richard R. Gwyn, and four sisters Genie Gwyn W D Co Mrs. W. R. Simpson Statesville Mrs. T. D. Gilliam and Mrs. J. W. Ashby. Funeral was Sunday at 4 pm at the home with Rev. C. N. Clark and Rev. Robert Carter officiating.

Mount Airy High School baseball dropped two games last week. Elkin High defeated Mount Airy 6 to 5 in Elkin, as Mt Airy rallied with four runs in the fourth and one in the eighth. Mikin totaled 13 hits on the week while Mount Airy had 11 errors. In the Tuesday game, Walkertown beat Mount Airy 3 to 1. Browne led Mount Airy with a double and four safeties in three trips, while Chilton added five straight hits for Copeland.

Thomas W. Gilbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Gilbert, received an honorable discharge after 32 months in service with 26 months in Africa Italy Corsica France Belgium and Germany. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge Good Conduct Medal American Theatre Ribbon ETO Ribbon with three stars Purple Heart and Victory Ribbon. Cpl. Gray Eads was discharged March 30 at Camp Lejeune after 29 months in the Marines including Iwo Jima with the 5th Tank Battalion and six months with occupation forces in Sasebo and Nagasaki. He wears the Orange Star Medal Presidential Unit and Asiatic Pacific ribbons and World War II Victory ribbon. He is married to Lydia Wyrick. Sgt. Gaston Martin arrived from Fort Bragg after service in the Aleutians. Sgt. Wilson E. Patterson returned to Camp Lee Va after leave with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Cox learned their son James will be home on the west coast in a few days. Warrant Officer Thor Johnson was released from service and plans a business trip to Philadelphia and New York.
