Father of Mrs. John Woltz Dies Tuesday

Thomas Lenoir Gwyn 71 of Waynesville died at 1 30 p m Tuesday after a brief illness. He was the first Tenth District Highway Commissioner and Haywood County Representative and chaired the legislature committee of the N C Good Roads Association which promoted the 50 000 000 road bond issue. Survived by widow and daughter Mrs Woltz funeral held Thursday in Waynesville.

Many Visitors To Attend WCTU District Meeting

The Mount Airy Red Cross drive reports 10,574 raised toward a 12,004 quota after a tornado aid boost. Elkin district has 4,200. Frank Jones urges gifts from remaining areas to complete the county drive.

Captain Birkner Named Executive Officer in Trieste

Captain John F. Birkner, formerly motor officer of the 7101 GD, becomes executive officer of Headquarters Company TRUST in Trieste Italy. He led the depot athletic program as head football coach for three years boxing coach two years and assistant baseball coach for two years. He is the son of Mrs. Frank Birkner of Byerly Street.

Judge Llewellyn Returns to Recorder’s Court

Judge H. H. Llewellyn resumed duties in Recorder’s Court after a 10 week leave in Miami. He returned tanned and noted selling Parkway property to a Florida buyer planning summer residence here, predicting more Florida residents will summer on the Parkway.

Three Local Men Receive Discharges

Three Mount Airy men discharged from the Army in the past week. Kent Tayman left Fort Bragg on Saturday and will return to the local post office. Tom Neal also discharged at Fort Bragg and Howard Beeson left Fort Jackson to resume work at North Carolina Granite Corporation. Beeson and Tayman had overseas service. Neal remained in the United States after transfer.

Fletcher Harris, former shipping clerk at Mount Airy Man tel and Table Company, named by Surry County Board of Commissioners to fill the unexpired coroner term after Dr. J. N. Woltz death. Harris, Elkin native, had acted as coroner for months and led several inquests. He and his family live on Cherry Street in Mount Airy.

The Surry County Home Demonstration Club Chorus formed in 1950 plans spring and summer singing programs under director Mrs Kester Sink and accompanist Mrs Madge Badgett. Trout Season Opens in Surry County April Fifteenth

Surry County will open trout season on Tuesday April 15. Game Warden George B. Beamer reports stocking about 3100 trout in headwater streams including Ramey Carson Saddle Mountain Merritt Cooper Big Fish and Little Fish Rivers. Daily limit is ten with a warning not to return caught fish. Assistants from Stokes Forsyth and local deputies Galyean and Snow will aid in enforcement.
