Freeman announces registrars and judges for the primary and general election. Filing for county offices closes Saturday at 6 PM. Primary set for May 25, with magistrates and constables required to pay a $5 filing fee if listed on the ballot.
Mount Airy resident G K Snow was the chief speaker at the Pilot Mountain Civitan Club gathering Monday night. Winston-Salem Civitan members Ellis Ashburn and Norman Stone joined, with J A Snow also delivering brief remarks on citizenship and American rights.
In Des Moines a woman securing a fourth marriage license had her first husband present as groom No. 3 accompanied the couple to the clerk’s office and paid the marriage fee.
Sheriff H S Boyd sought the return of Hassel Wood of Surry County from Sanford on hit and run charges after a winter crash near Beulah School involving a Walker vehicle and injured passengers. Sanford police reported a man named Wood was arrested there and held on warrant charges related to the crash. Sheriff Boyd traveled to Sanford to complete a formal inquiry and secure Wood’s return if possible.
Hatcher Hardware Company announces a move from its current site next to the Duke Power Company to the J. D. Smith building. No plans were disclosed for the old location.
Sheriff H. Boyd and Deputies FE Jones and F C Sprinkle raided a camouflaged steam distillery above Mountain Park in Bryan township. They destroyed about 5,600 gallons of mash, captured a pickup, and pursued six operators who fled. one man was handcuffed but injured Jones during the clash. The operation had run about a year.
Daniel Eli Stockner, a farmer from Fancy Gap, was found dead about 200 yards from the Blue Ridge Parkway and two miles west of the Mount Airy Hillsville highway on Saturday afternoon. Police ruled death from a heart attack, estimated at about 40 hours dead. He was native to Carroll County Virginia and survived by his widow Sarah Easter Stockner, three sons, seven daughters, and several siblings. Funeral at Fancy Primitive Baptist Church Monday at 10 oclock with burial in the family cemetery.
Young men are slated to attend a military training camp. The event aims to provide basic training and reinforce discipline among recruits as part of ongoing defense preparation.
Dobson war monument committee seeks updated names to be carved on the granite shaft. Local post requests all names not yet on the list be sent promptly for inclusion.
T G Shelton dies in Statesville. His wife is the former Elmina Mills of Statesville, sister of Mrs. T G Fawcett of Mount Airy. He leaves three sons and one daughter. Funeral will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the family home in Statesville.
Mount Airy joined four other North Carolina cities to receive the National Safety Council honor roll award for a record of no traffic fatalities in towns with populations between 5,000 and 10,600.
Plans are laid for an Apple Blossom promotion in Surry. Sheriff Boyd and J W Jesup nab transporters near the Sparger Orc. Five gallons of white liquor are captured in the operation.
The public is invited to hear popular entertainers at Bannertown School and Pleasant View Methodist Church. Sponsors appreciate patronage. Admission is 15 and 25 cents.
Eugene Worrell, Wake Forest College law student and Bristol Virginia native, captured the best collegiate orator honor at the Pi Kappa Delta convention in Knoxville Tennessee. He was elected president of the Student Legislative Assembly amid a tournament featuring 110 colleges and universities.
Friday followed a week long visit with Mrs. Atkins' father D. H. Atkins of Port Burwill Ontario Canada. They were ee ee Seeeee ins and son Russell of Ararat.
In Surry County the Republican convention selected Alberty as chairman after a tight contest with Coley Palk. Hiatt resigns as county chairman for business reasons. The ticket mentions Porter Wall, Audrey Lowe, and E L Serene for county commissioners. Hiatt pledges to oppose liquor sales and to curb county spending while seeking the Legislature.
The Meant Airy Graniteers will face the Winston-Salem Twins on Reddick Field on Saturday April 18 at 3 o clock. Baker hit a home run for Mount.
Mayor John D. Thompson announces April 15 to 26 as Clean-up Paint-up Week with the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Mount Airy Girl Scouts as co sponsors. He urges town support and promotes a Jaycees prize contest for best projects. Trash pickup trucks will assist. citizens may call 148 J to place orders.
The Mount Airy Knights of Pythias Lodge 242 will host state officers and members from North Carolina lodges next Tuesday night April 16. Marvin Ellis announced this week. Refreshments will be served and the full membership is to hear delegates from all sections of the state.
Funeral services for 80 year old Martha Elizabeth Cooke were held at Laurel Springs Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Elder J C. The obituary notes Beulah native and long time resident.
Economy Auto announces additions to its staff this week. Mr. 8 G. Blackwelder of the Bwa Goodrich sales staff joins Ra Auto Supply along with temporary associate Mr. John Kennedy. A Tyndall confirms no changes to store operations while the announcement is made.
Fourteen residents and civic leaders met at City Hall to promote apple blossom scenery and attract visitors to Mount Airy on April 19 20 21 from a wide area. A directional tourist booth will be set up in Mount Airy during the season. The first broadcast is planned and final three day plans will be announced next week in THE NEWS.
The Poy Lumber Co of this city becomes local dealer for Duco Paint. A factory demonstration by Lies was shown and a new line is added to the program. The text notes a partnership and showcases updated offerings from the suppliers in the area.
