Senator Folger proposes a law to appoint a County Tax Collector in Surry County with offices in Dobson Elkin and Mount Airy to supervise tax collections. The Sheriff would focus on law enforcement and courts, with deputies and a possible full time deputy if needed, effective December 1936.
O R Holder 43 died suddenly from a heart attack Monday night while working as a mechanic at B H Service Station in Winston-Salem. Funeral held at his home and Calvary Moravian Church with burial in Moravian Cemetery.
Senators Reynolds and colleagues pressed for action on the Scenic Parkway after meetings with the Federal Bureau of Roads and Interior Secretary Ickes. Engineers survey the Blue Ridge route from Mount Airy into Virginia with dirt movement expected within weeks as the relief bill restores sixteen million dollars for completion.
Mr. P. H. Lyday the local telephone manager reports strong student interest in his moving pictures on modern telephone development and usage. Billie Simpson helps operate a portable projector as films explain trans ocean communication and the work of telephone personnel.

Miss Callie Virginia Shockley Syratus Va underwent appendicitis surgery and Mr Huch Polger City is an accident case. Mr C Monroe Johnson Pilot Mountain R2 had acute appendicitis surgery. Discharges include Mrs Oscar K Boyer and baby Winston Salem and Mrs F M Tolbert Cana Va.
Newt Fowler left Tent for Dallas Texas where he has been assigned as assistant division manager for Brown Williamson Tobacco Co He will continue to reside in this city for the present.
Mayor EF C Ashby declares next week as Clean Up Week in Mount Airy and asks all residents to place rubbish in boxes or barrels at convenient locations for easy collection by trash trucks. Special efforts will focus on removing all city rubbish.
Mount Airy High School Glee Club directed by Miss Evelyn Coleman will enter four events in the district elimination contest in Winston-Salem on Saturday April 13 as part of the state wide glee club contest. Winners advance to the state finals in Greensboro starting April 26.
Smooth sailing for Mount Airy Baseball Club as finances are settled and a new park is nearing completion. Sod and sand work finished, grand stand near completion, opening game vs Bassett set for April 25 with 1,500 pre sold tickets. Players arrive in mid April to train.
L. W. Tickle and J. W. Hampton become joint owners of the B. and H. Service Station on Main Street opposite the Mount Airy post office. The station and garage, previously owned by D. S. Hodge, are now under Tickle’s management.
Members of the Philathea Class of Central M. E. Church will sell homemade cakes pies and other charitable items Saturday in the Blue Ridge Hotel block beside Paddison Jewelry Co. The sale starts at 10:00 A.M. Public support is invited. Mr J Lon Tilley of Cameron visited relatives in the area last week.
The United Choirs of Mount Airy directed by Rev E T Mickey Jr present The Seven Last Words of Christ by Theodore DuBoise at Central Methodist Church next Sunday April 14 at 4 30 PM A silver offering will defray expenses and no charge is made to attend. funds are volunteered with no church subsidy, and generous gifts help sustain future programs.
Relief workers in Mount Airy will move to new quarters at the city pumping station. The old pump house below the new station will be converted into offices with south side access beside Floyd Poore Park. The Willow Street room will remain for storage while executive and office tasks move to the new quarters.
Democrats will file for a May sixth city election ticket with mayor and five commissioners. E C Bivens asks hopefuls to enter via a two dollar fee before April seventeenth. If only one name per office is filed, no primary is held and the party picks its nominee. Local officials, including Mayor Ashby and all five commissioners, are expected to seek renomination.
Patrons at the Grand Theatre experience Wide Range, a Western Electric Laboratories invention. The system, first used this week, faithfully reproduces high and low notes, a challenge for prior equipment.
The Duke Endowment announced allocations totaling 965000 to hospitals and orphanages in North and South Carolina for 1934. Martin Memorial Hospital Mount Airy received 6780, others include Elkin Hospital 4944 and Baptist Hospital 9274, with 63000 free patients supported and 6049 orphans aided across homes and hospitals.
Arthur Lee Watson, eight weeks old, is very ill after a cold possibly leading to whooping cough. His brother Franklin Roosevelt weighs seven pounds and his sister weighs four pounds while both siblings recover under Dr. A. M. Gates care. In the same city visit, Dr Gates announced the birth of twin boys to Mr. and Mrs. Sam Goins, the couple already having eight children in eight years of marriage.
The University of North Carolina Glee Club will perform a concert at the Rockford Street School Auditorium on April 26 at 8:00 P M under the direction of H Grady Miller. Sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Trinity Episcopal Church, public patronage is invited.
Nina Taylor and Mrs. Howard Delp were arrested at the local police headquarters last Monday after a Grayson County jury sentenced their husband to death for the February 21 murder of Galax chief P. C. Martin. The women caused a disturbance in jail, later sobered, and left town after their release on Tuesday morning.
Robert Montgomery age 32 died at his parents Route 2 home at 2:00 AM Tuesday. The funeral was held at 2:00 PM Wednesday with interment in the Montgomery family cemetery. He was the son of Able and Mrs Laura Forkner Montgomery.
Noah W Alderman 48 a blacksmith and Carroll County Va native died at home on Route 3 Saturday at 1100 P. M. He was a son of Solomon A and Mrs Susan Keith Montgomery of Carroll County Panera services were conducted from Pine Ridge Methodist Church at 1100 A. M. Monday by Rev J L In gram and Rev C C Pearson.
Mrs. Willie Moore Gentry and Mrs. O. R. Moore of this city attended a district meeting in Hickory last Friday. Around 300 to 400 teachers and students were present, with Surry represented by 23 people including 18 teachers. Mr. Clyde Sorrels presided. Dr. J. Henry Highsmith, Mr. McIntosh, and L. H. Jobe from Raleigh were on the program.
Dr J A Whitaker, Surry County Health Officer, spends most time on preschool clinic work across county schools this month. Attendance ranges from 5 to 35 per site. no fee is charged for examinations. Children are weighed, checked for ailments, and vaccinated for smallpox and diphtheria with a new serum requiring only one injection.
