Four Area Wrecks Leave Nine Hurt Saturday and Sunday
Nine people were treated at Northern Surry Hospital after four area wrecks Saturday and Sunday. The incidents included a 1952 Ford overturning at North Surry High School injuring three, a 1961 Ford crash near Ridge Westfield School injuring three, a rear collision on NC 89 near Lowgap injuring two, and a 1963 Ford crash on McKinney Road injuring one. An apparent misunderstanding and community criticism followed a county promotion to sell tickets to a Arthur Smith Show sponsored by the Surry County sheriff. Sheriff Jim Taylor noted a Charlotte promotion firm used county businessmen to push ticket purchases with profits said to fund riot equipment or department equipment. A Mount Airy businessman heard money would support a ladies auxiliary, which the sheriff’s department denies existing.

In Raleigh, two Surry County road contractors were named apparent low bidders. Sherman Simpson Inc of Mount Airy bid 103,057 for 5.2 miles of US 20 resurfacing in Caswell and Rockingham.
