The Pilot Mountain Board named Marvin Hutchens Police Chief at a special meeting Tuesday night. Hutchens fills the vacancy left by the death of Chief Sidney C Patt on March 14 and had been serving on leave from Surry County Sheriff Hudson Graham. He previously served as a Pilot Mountain officer and Surry deputy, with the commission praising his qualifications among six applicants.
Mount Airy officers stopped two youths after a tip and found heavy penny scales loaded for transfer. Patterson and Riddle face larceny and breaking and entering charges for scales gum and cigarette machines tires tools and a cash loot totaling about 400 dollars. Bonds set at 2400 and 1900 respectively.
Oakdale Knitting Company announces a 400000 expansion in Mount Airy Industrial Park. A 32000 square foot plant and new equipment will raise staff from 130 to about 250, with completion targeted for August 2. The project adds work for local firms and expands Oakdale’s manufacturing and global sales reach.

A major downtown Mount Airy sale set for 4pm covers the northern half of North Main Street and Market Street along with Oak Street. The auction, handled by George Sparger Real Estate, includes the Blue Ridge Hotel and the old Sears building with around 30,000 square feet of ground level space. After a seven day civil trial in Surry County, Mount Airy surgeon Dr. Benjamin J. Lawrence Jr. was found not liable for 400000 in damages in a case brought by Laura Gene Galloway and her mother Lois Galloway. The jury, 10-2 on first ballot, deliberated briefly before verdict. Defense witnesses testified Lawrence was a skilled, careful surgeon and that Bryant's traction used was proper for the fracture.
Dobson voters heard a nonpartisan slate at a public meeting nominating mayor and town commissioners. Incumbent Mayor John Comer and all current commissioners were renominated alongside three new candidates Walter Blevins Ray Hagwood and Merlin Atkins. May election will fill five seats with no rerun option.
After a four year dispute between North Carolina and Virginia highway officials a compromise on I-77 routing was approved by the US Bureau of Public Roads. The tentative plan edges toward North Carolina’s easterly route near Mount Airy with a bridge on the Yadkin River near Elkin serving as a key link.
John Midkiff of Midkiff Hardware was honored by Goodyear for 50 years as a dealer. He received a plaque from R F Bell and a personal letter from Russ DeYoung. Located at the same site since inception, the business notes tire evolution from three sizes to modern innovations.
