Mount Airy drew thousands for Good Friday and Saturday as crowds filled streets and parking, with extra police directing traffic. Mayberry Mall and outlying shops reported heavy business and 49 percent more shoppers than last year as Easter fashions went quickly.

Salvation Army Annual Meeting at Grace Morman Church

The Salvation Army will hold its annual board meeting Monday at 6 30 pm at Grace Morman Church. Captain Jack Edwards leads the local unit and Colonel Gordon Sawyers will be the keynote speaker. Plaques and certificates will be presented to clubs media outlets schools and firms for Christmas season support.

Beginners Day In Mount Airy Schools Set For April 30

Beginner's Day in Mount Airy city schools will be held on Wednesday April 30 at 1 p.m. All children entering first grade should be registered immediately at the school they will attend. Parents urged to immunize children at health department or by family physician as soon as possible.

Officer Captures Escaped Prisoner Near Davis Arcade

Police patrolman Monroe Boggs spotted Jack B. Thomas 28 an escapee from Davie Prison Camp in a parking lot near Davis Arcade and detained him. A 22 caliber pistol was found in a sack. Thomas resisted and was cuffed. Davie County prison camp authorities later took him into custody.

Funeral services set for Mrs Mary Jane Leake

The 71 year old Mrs Mary Jane Leake of Riverside Drive Mount Airy will be buried in Mountain View Cemetery after a funeral at Mount Airy tomorrow at 3 pm. She died Sunday at Forsyth Memorial Hospital Winston-Salem born in Stokes County to James Alex Taylor and Mary Bell France Taylor. Surviving are her husband John Henry Leake two sons John Thomas Smith and William Carter a stepdaughter Irene King Greensboro two stepsons Ralph and James Leake Mount Airy a sister Lavenia Hauser Mount Airy and two brothers Jonah Taylor Mount Airy and James Milton Taylor Norfolk.

Safety program uncovers faults in North Carolina vehicles

Over 2.49 million vehicles were inspected in 1968 with 2,488,907 safety certificates issued. Faulty lighting appeared in 725,648 vehicles, brakes or turn signals in 262,723, windshield wipers in 98,018, horns in 31,107, and unsafe steering in 27,224. Victims paid 2,162,211.9 dollars to fix issues. End of 1968 saw 5,427 stations with 15,445 licensed mechanics.

Funeral services were held for Oscar Floyd Patterson 73 at Needham Funeral Home Chapel. He died Friday at Manorfare Winston-Salem. Weekend Police Roundup Reports 44 Arrests

Area officers logged 44 new cases at Mount Airy police headquarters over the weekend. Of these, 30 arrests by police, 10 by state troopers, and 4 by sheriff's deputies. Auto violations counted 20 with eight drunken driving cases and liquor law infractions totaling 15. The rest covered miscellaneous offenses.

Easter Sunrise Rites Continue Amid Cloudy Weather
