Physician Takes Stand Answers His Accusers in civil suit
Mount Airy surgeon Dr. Benjamin J. Lawrence Jr. testified in his own defense for a day and a half in a $400000 civil suit filed by a six year old girl and her mother over the amputation of the girl's leg after a 1962 accident. The trial entered its fifth day with cross examination conducted by plaintiffs' attorneys while defense witnesses described traction care and circulation checks at Northern Surry Hospital.

William Holden Slain By Bullet
William Luther Holden 43 of Mount Airy died from a self-inflicted pistol wound after reportedly writing letters for his wife to read later. The coroner ruled death by own action and no inquest was held. Holden, a Northern Surry Hospital employee and World War II veteran, is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter, a brother and four sisters. Funeral services were held at Crooked Oak Primitive Baptist Church with burial at the church.
