Surry County 4-H members held a Talent Show at the County Council meeting in the Agricultural Building auditorium in Dobson. Thirty-five representatives performed with nine blue ribbons awarded. top performers were selected to represent the county at the District Talent Show in Lexington.

Bryant, pastor of First Baptist Roanoke, has served in Clemson College Baton Heights Richmond Baltimore and Roanoke, and has traveled to Berlin the Holy Land Panama and Alaska.

Bertha Albertson Peace 66 dies at High Point
Mrs. Bertha Albertson Peace, 66, widow of J. D. Peace, died at High Point Memorial Hospital Monday March 28. She lived in High Point 28 years and is survived by a son Jacob Dennis Peace Archdale and seven daughters in High Point and elsewhere. Funeral services were held at Oakview Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday with burial at Mount Vernon Church Cemetery in Trinity.

George Helder Completes 10 Day Germany Field Training
Cpl. George A. Helder 21 son of Mr and Mrs Gurney Helder route 4 Mount Airy recently completed a 10 day field training problem in Germany. The exercise tested the 24th Engineer Field Maintenance Company's effectiveness under simulated combat and involved repairing bulldozers power shovels graders and cranes. Helder entered the Army in June 1953 and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri before arriving overseas in December. He is a Franklin High School graduate of 1953.

Dobson 8th Grader Wins Spelling Bee
A 14 year old eighth grader from Dobson School won the Surry County spelling bee with a perfect score on a 100 word test and heads to the Winston-Salem bee to defend the Journal and Sentinel-WSJS title. Faye Pike is the daughter of Mr and Mrs George Pike and is coached by E L Reece. She aspires to the national championship and to become a teacher. Second place went to Jo Crawford and third to Carol Hunter.

Mount Airy Men Win Top Ham Show Awards in Winston-Salem
Gurney Hodges of Mount Airy won the grand championship with a 19 pound hickory cured ham in the Northwest North Carolina Country Ham show and sale in Winston-Salem. Rufus Gardner, also of Mount Airy, took first in the mediumweight class. Archie K. Davis bought Hodges ham for 1.70 per pound at the auction. Davis is a Wachovia senior vice president and former regional development leader.

Revival begins Sunday at Haymore Baptist Church
Rev James Claude Peck, chaplain-intern at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, will speak at the Haymore Memorial Baptist Church Spring revival from Sunday night April 10 to Sunday night April 17. Peck was born in Lafayette Indiana and educated at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously pastored Central Gardens Baptist Church Beaumont Texas before joining Baptist Hospital. Roy Davis is pastor of the church.

Fruit Growers May Obtain FHA Loans
The Surry County FHA Office in Dobson reports the National Office has authorized Production Emergency Loans for qualified applicants damaged by the recent freeze affecting fruit vegetables and other crops. Surry County was declared a disaster area last fall and the same loan rules apply to freeze damage applications. The Farmers Home Administration office is in the Agricultural Building in Dobson.
