Seaman Arlyn Hughes son of Mr and Mrs Alton Hughes Mount Airy route 1 recently completed a Naval Communication Technician school in San Diego California He is now on a 9 day leave with his parents and will return to the West Coast for further duty.
Howard Hauser and James Wade McCraw, both 34, were bound over to the Superior Court after being charged with three counts each of breaking and entering and larceny and receiving from local firms. The crimes involve Haynes Coal and Oil Company Cook's Cafe and Mount Airy Mirror Company with at least two thefts. Footprints tied one suspect to the scene. Judge E C Bivens set a $1000 bond for each, citing probable guilt. both were drunk at arrest.
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Moxley who died on her 88th birthday at her Hillcrest home near Galax were held Sunday March 23 at 11 a.m. in Crab Creek church. Survived by seven children and interment followed in Crab Creek cemetery. Elders Edd Douglas and Joe Boaz conducted the service.
Mrs. Almedia Gwyn marked her 80th birthday with an outdoor lawn dinner at her son J. D. Gwyn’s home in the city. About 100 friends and relatives attended the Sunday event including croquet and singing in the afternoon.
Gray S Harbour AT2 son of Mr and Mrs Alton Harbour of this city survived an October 22 airplane crash in icy Japanese waters. He served as a technician aboard a patrol plane with 38 hops and 125 hours, and was rescued by a destroyer after the craft went down near the ship at Yokosuka.
Town Tire Service was awarded an Army contract to recap tires for service vehicles. The six week project requires 24 hour operation and the use of a full military tread to meet the terms.
City Building Inspector J Ed Brannock announced to commissioners that Mount Airy issued $80 200 in building permits in the first three months of 1952. The total included six new homes 283 repairs four private garages one garage apartment and a dry cleaning plant. A new dry cleaning plant for Tri Angles Cleaners at $17 500 was started by J C Tucker of Winston Salem.
James F. Jim Red Goins 57 of the Toast community died by self inflicted gunshot about 6 30 a m at his home found by his son Cecil Goins. Surry County Coroner ruled death a suicide no inquest necessary. He left no note and survived by wife Lizzie nee McGraw mother Becky Goins four sons Cecil Rossie George Charles all of Toast one daughter Millard Lee of Toast one sister Mrs Claude Goins Mount Airy Route 1 services at Old Hollow Primitive Baptist Church burial in church cemetery
Mr and Mrs Sig Schafer of Raleigh visited his brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs I A Schafer and his mother Mrs R Schafer on Franklin Street during the past week in a brief family gathering with several days spent there.
The Kiwanis Club in Mount Airy plans a Farmers Day program for Friday July 11. About 1200 invitations will be sent to farmers in Surry Carroll Patrick and Stokes Counties. The morning program will be directed by the Agricultural Extension Department of State College under Neill M. Smith of Surry County.
The Mount Airy Merchants Association says stores will stay open next Thursday afternoon April 10 to handle Easter shopping. They will close on Easter Monday April 14. A free lunch for farmers accompanies group meetings followed by music and a speaker at Reeves YMCA Community Center.
Dr Robert E Smith will sail next Tuesday from New York on the Queen Elizabeth to England for a course at the University of Edinburgh Scotland. After completing the course he will tour France Sweden Holland Italy and Germany and attend a medical meeting in Madrid Spain before returning to the United States in six weeks.
The Jesse B. Jones Post of the American Legion meets at 7 30 PM tonight at Veterans Memorial Park. Members are urged to attend and take part in an attendance contest now underway.
Two state candidates William B. Umstead and Luther H. Hodges visited Mount Air this week amid primary campaigning. Umstead of Durham roads campaign with A. B. Carter as local chairman. Hodges of Leaksville pursues lieutenant governor, touring 100 counties. Both met with The NEWS editor to outline platforms.
Dr Mary Kapp of Richmond arrived Saturday to spend a vacation with her parents Mr and Mrs E C Kapp of this city.
James R. McNeil elected commander of Claude E Hooker Post 2019 VFW at a Friday meeting. Dennis Moody chosen Senior Vice Commander with Ralph Boyles as Junior Vice Commander. New year officers include Lassie Kirkman quartermaster Rev R C Pooley chaplain Paul Brown trustee Charles Randleman surgeon Dr Phillip Pearson.
The women of Willow Hill Moravian Church will serve a ham supper in the church dining room on Saturday from 5 30 to 8 30 p m Adults pay 1 per plate and children 50 cents per plate Adjustments include the location and pricing details for the community event.
Four Pendleton Junior Music Club members performed at the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival in Greensboro College Odell Auditorium. Philip Stanley and Maryann Johnson earned superior ratings while Brenda Hair and Elizabeth York were rated very good. all studied under Mrs. William Pendleton.
Evangelist Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse will lead city wide revival starting Sunday in Granite City. Services run 7 30 p m at the new high school auditorium and daily Monday through Friday at 10 30 a m Central Methodist Church and 7 30 p m at the high school venue. Dr. Barnhouse, a pioneer radio preacher and editor, brings a coast to coast ministry connected with the Evangelical Foundation of Philadelphia. The revival is sponsored by local churches with Dr D S McCarty and Rev R Carrington Paulette directing arrangements.
Constable Harry Monday raided and destroyed a 55 gallon liquor still and tools one mile north of the city limits on Springs Road near the Fulton farm. The outfit was moving as he arrived. a nearby woman warned she would call the law, and no arrests were made.
Charges against Bryan Graveley Wayne Hall and Dennis Kirkman for burning a cross in front of Tom Wrights home were marked not pros by Solicitor R J Lovill Jr in Recorder's Court after a key witness failed to appear and prior issues were cited. Wrights family quarrel had recently escalated with Wright found guilty in an assault case in the same court.
R D George secretary of the Workmen s Federal Savings and Loan Association was named to the Fidelity Bonds and Insurance committees of the United States Savings and Loan League by Ben H Hazen of Portland Oregon president the announcement said.
R B Blackwelder of Dobson announced Surrey County's Easter Seals goal is 1200 dollars to aid handicapped children from natural diseases excluding polio. The county is split into Elkin Pilot Mountain Mount Airy Dobson and county schools. Last year 700 dollars was raised but needs are greater this year.
The Claytor Lake area in Pulaski County Virginia has become a fishing hub with thirty Mount Airy residents docking boats and more planning purchases. Local figures including Dr R M Caldwell City Commissioner W H Foy and others are building boat houses or cabins. State funds are allocated for park improvements though some projects stalled by NPA limits. Fishermen boast big catches and share tales of near misses while wives and neighbors receive the spoils.
