Allen Brothers Executed After Prolonged Virginia Trial

Floyd Allen and his son Claude Swanson Allen were put to death in the Virginia State Penitentiary after a drawn out legal battle sparked by the Hillsville court murders. Governor Mann arrived to oversee proceedings as appeals stalled, and both men faced the chair within hours, while crowds gathered at the prison and undertaker’s rooms to view the bodies before burial in Southwest Virginia.

Mount Airy Town Election Ordered May 5 1913

The Mount Airy North Carolina Board of Commissioners orders a municipal election for mayor two at large members and two ward commissioners to be held May 5 1913. Polling places designated Piedmont Warehouse and Reel House. Registrars and judges appointed for both wards with April registration from April 9 to April 26 1913. Notice to be posted in public places and in The Mount Airy News for thirty days.

Floyd and Claud Allen end deadly Hillsville case confession

In a final statement from Virginia State Prison dated March 27 1913 Floyd Allen says he acted without premeditation when his father was shot and defends his innocence. He claims no plot existed and absolves others while apologizing for the death and asking forgiveness from his mother sweetheart and supporters.
