State Will Not Provide Road Aid for New County Hospital
The North ern Surry County hospital site plan faced a setback as the State Highway and Public Works Commission said it would not assist in building access roads. In a letter from Highway Commissioner W R Winkler the department stated it could not participate in driveways or roads to the proposed hospital on the Banner farm site. The project had estimated road costs over 250000 and state aid is unlikely regardless of location, leaving road funding to local sources such as Powell Bill funds despite competing city paving requests.

Edward C. Gehring 39 of Albemarle died at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Hospital Salisburb. He was husband of Doris Cockerham and father of Robert and John. Survived by parents from Pennsylvania. Funeral at 2:50 p.m. Friday at Episcopal Church Albemarle. J. E. Cockerham and Mrs. Cockerham with Mr. and Mrs. Randleman traveled to be with the family.

FBI agent R. Trent told Chief M. W. Boone that Daltn Parks, wanted for breaking and entering and larceny, is in custody in Phoenix. Parks admitted stealing about $200 from the Salvation Army Hall on December 8, 1953, though Lt. Tiddman cited $83 missing. Parks faces auto theft charges in Arizona. his parents live in Charlotte. He had earlier stayed in Mount Airy in December and sought aid from the Salvation Army.
