The Moulton school paper notes staff roles and a rough path ahead for the boys and girls basketball teams against Moravia Friday. It welcomes new science teacher Mr. Scott and comments on lingering bad weather, groundhog day, and a warm Monday. The piece closes with friendly, if teasing, student messages and welcomes the Scotts to town.
The group finished their first edition of shorthand last week and now works with a second edition under Mr. Jones. He dictates letters at 40 to 80 words per minute as students transcribe from pads to typewriter on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The text lists a freshman with brown hair and blue eyes, 100 pounds, height five feet one inch, and details favorite foods, car, sport, film, actors, songs, and personal mottos. It notes pastimes, ambitions, and mentions last week's mystery person as Diana Marvin.
A sophomore lists personal traits and preferences including hair color black eyes blue weight 165 pounds height five feet eight and a half inches while noting interests in baseball softball and sleeping. He mentions Burt Lancaster Jane Fonda Bobby Darin and Elvis era items and aims to be a truck driver or meat cutter.
January weather observations recorded by Mrs Moore and students Vicki Sales and Barbara Howard are noted. Judith Daley returns from Kirksville hospital, with many absences due to illness and extreme cold this semester.
Udell fourth grade students in Mrs. Dooley's class share original poems about weather topics. Elaine Cox Alice Alden Dwight Pfannebecker and Bobby Cornett contribute verses as the class notes Iowa Basic Skills tests and reading tests with Basic Readers. They discuss television, group games, basketball, and seed study with corn wheat beans and grass to plant.
Fifth grade pupils from Southgate School near Albany New York exchange letters as part of English and Social Studies. Students share questions about communities crops and schools while seniors plan event reports collect clippings pictures and plan posters and booklets.
Mrs Exline reports on math place value to ten thousand Hindu Arabic numbers and zero as a placeholder. Students demonstrate phone etiquette, see a battery motor, finish Weekly Reader and Basic Reading tests, and complete a plants unit booklet.
Gale Lee Marvin, 17, son of Mr and Mrs Mardell, stands 6 ft tall and weighs 178 lbs. He studies English, Social Problems, Algebra, Shop and Agriculture, with a favorite subject in Agriculture and a favorite song She Thinks I Still Care. He enjoys basketball, baseball, and swimming and remains undecided about future plans.
In English IV students finish novels and start literature, with weekly reports and short story sketches shared in class. They have been writing research themes, each student selecting a different topic and preparing to devote time to completing them.
Iowa Tests were taken in January's third week to identify needed skills. Mrs. Wright filled in for Mrs. McCoy due to her mother's illness as several students were absent with colds. Reading classes studied New Street and Roads and The Buttons while others finished Second Reader and prepared bar graphs for spelling progress. A hobby display accompanied reading lessons on January 25, and language activities included making films and posters about read stories. The January bulletin board theme is A New Year Get A New Start.
The area enjoys spring like warmth with readings in the 40s and 50s compared to zero last week. Mr and Mrs Edwin Boettcher and family hosted a pre birthday dinner for Nancy Boettcher, while other locals shared visits and news of illness and a stroke.
Vivian Daniels expresses gratitude to friends and neighbors for cards flowers and deeds of kindness during a Davis County Hospital stay. A family gathering at Dick Bogle home honored Tommy Bogle who leaves for Ft Dix and then Germany, with Mr and Mrs Bill Guler Jr and family Mr and Mrs Wendell Thomas of Centerville and Mrs Fred Gronlund of Albuquerque attending.
Mrs. Clay Johnson of Dallas Center transplanted a hybrid tomato last fall. Kept the plant in a window and soon a tomato appeared. Blooming so late in the fall is unusual for a tomato plant in her garden.
Minister Louis Schaffner leads Hilltown Christian Church with Sunday School at 10:00 A M and Communion at 11:00 A M on September. Service occurs every other Sunday at 7:30 P M led by Lester Hutchison.
