Local Agriculture Teachers Attend In-Service Training At Bellville

District IV in service training for Vocational Agriculture teachers was held in Bellville on Tuesday September 15 with Mr. W L Young and Mr. Leroy Hajdik attending. Beef cattle was the training theme and visits covered a commercial feed lot and a small farm feeding 75 head per year. The commercial operation charges 5 cents per day per head plus feed costs and can sell cattle as desired or via operator guidance. An average daily gain of about two pounds at roughly 22 cents per pound was noted with about one thousand head in the lots on the visit day. The smaller operation began with ten head and expanded to 75 to 100 head annually after cotton farming ended, using a Sears Roebuck feed mixer as its only significant investment. Both setups show income opportunities for local farmers seeking to diversify away from cotton.
