The Record Herald reports 40 000 to 50 000 colonists have moved into the far Western and Southwestern states in September and October. New Orleans October 27 The Rice Market shows no change in rough rice with buyers focusing on fancy grades while low lines weaken. Clean rice remains active with light receipts and strong demand. Portu guese dice glut persists though exporters expect brisk inquiries from San Juan and Ponce next month. A new sixty four mile irrigating canal project backed by a New York syndicate, capitalized at 1 million dollars, moves forward to aid drought relief and transport in St. Landry Acadia Calcasieu and Iberia parishes, with anticipated floodwater supply and navigation for boats and barges to aid fuel oil transport.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, renowned woman suffragist, died at her West Ninety Fourth Street home in New York at age eighty four. Old age was given as the cause. Interment is planned for Woodlawn Cemetery following a service held on Tuesday.
Alfred Peterson, a Swedish piano maker in New York, invited friends for a cheerful gathering. As he proposed a toast to his fatherland he drew a revolver and shot himself, dying instantly as stunned guests watched.
During the Sacred Heart cathedral dedication in Dallas Bishop E J Dunne received a telegram announcing his sister Mrs Kate Cary of Chicago had died. He continued the ceremony and remained present last night before leaving with Chicago clergy for the funeral.
Denver Colo October 28 The control of the Colorado Ful and Ron company will be transferred to St Louis next week An application will be made in the circuit court of appeals for a writ of superseders to stay all proceedings until the case can be heard on its merits
Leaver Col October 28 The executive board of the American Smelting and Refining company completed its conference and members departed tonight for a visit to Mexico.
On October 28 in Huntington Texas an early morning passenger train engine burst its boiler on the Frost road. The fireman suffered severe burns and the engineer was thrown from the cab in the blast. Local crews responded to the incident and medical aid was dispatched.
Cooper Texas October 28 W P Ulmer arrested and jailed on the charge of assault with intent to murder W A Jackman. They had a prior misunderstanding and Ulmer allegedly struck Jackman on the head with a large hickory stick in a Honest county store. Jackman is unconscious and feared dead.
Burglars broke into the back door of J H Mawhinney and Circleee Teak Co stores in Pryay Texas on Saturday night. They smashed a cash register near the exit and took a small amount of cash and some goods. Entrance was gained from the sidewalk through a broken window covered by wire netting. Police are alert after two similar recent burglaries.
Manila reports believe the president’s permit for foreign vessels to trade coastwise in the Philippines will immediately ease inter island freight and rice supply, reduce costs as famine looms. The civil commission plans swift action to avert misery among the poor amid war damage, drought, cholera, locusts, and falling silver prices hitting business prospects.
Hobart Oklahoma October 27 A E Shaw of Mountainview was found guilty here of the murder of Walter Burns a prominent young man of Graham Texas The filing arose from a land contest Shaw pleaded self recuse.
Governor Yates was confined to his home by illness after a three day campaign swing. His temperature rose to 103 degrees and officials fear a protracted illness may follow.
Prairie fires swept eighteen miles southwest of Castro last week driven by southerly winds. They burned at least ninety sections of grass over thirty miles, leaving owners strained for winter. The blaze only checked around 11 PM, and locals warn that fires are frequent and residents should prepare.
Ardmore Oct 27 Large herds of cattle near Marietta driven to Red River by order of the interior department as stockmen refuse to pay tribal tax now enforced by the U S government. They plan to seek an injunction to block tribal authorities from removing their stock.
John H. Harkelroad arrived in Velasco Texas on October 27 and attempted suicide with a razor after a meal. He injured himself twice before collapsing in a chair but survived. he had formerly lived in Brenham and left a note indicating the act was done with his own hand and will.
Comanche County Texas reports 8389 bales shipped to Tuesday, up from 5245 last year. About 0.36 more bales per yard. Comanches has shipped more cotton than any other station on the line. Frost could aid opening bottom land. All three mills in town remain cutting cotton.
J W Miller, a farmer from the Southmayor section, was held up by two robbers Saturday evening about three miles west of Sherman while driving home in his wagon. He escaped, reached the city, and filed a complaint.
