September 16 opening at Nickel High School with closure
Nickel High School began classes September 16 under Principal McArorey with assistants Miss Essie Pogue and Susie Gentry and Mise L raine Cluisa in charge of music. After two weeks influenza prompted a suspension, while students saluted the U S flag and sang patriotic tunes. The Lavaca River Association meeting with Moulton Baptist church on the 13th was postponed. A visit to Denton Creek cemetery notes a monument to Mrs. Sarah Cobb who died March 20, 1918. The site is well kept by veteran Mr. John Mills and enclosed by a substantial iron fence. The writer also visited Mr. and Mrs. J A Cooksey and Mr. Tip Davis, home of Mrs. Cooksey, in October 14, 1918 Lone Star.
