Mrs. C. B. Stone formally opened the Daughters of South session in Houston. The event marked the start of a new gathering with local members in attendance and speakers outlining the group’s community aims and activities.
Houston Texas reports the Shiloh Monument Association directors opening the sixteenth annual United Daughters of the Confederacy convention at the Rice Hotel. Delegates arrive from New York to California as Mrs John H Reagan, widow of a former Texas leader, attends. The executive board notes routine reports with no radical measures planned while praising the group’s work in monuments museums and educational efforts. In Yoakum dock Sistrunk shows goldbearing rock near Tope with an $80 000 land price reportedly refused, and $2 000 raised for Shiloh work.
Tanglewood Texas farmers report the cotton crop largely gathered and nearly sold, with corn and other crops also largely harvested. Work shifts to preparing land for the next crop while some farmers thrash peanuts, including Spanish peanuts grown for hog and cattle feed.
Jasper Driver a 63 year old Black man from Nacogdoches left alone for Rusk to serve his two year term after a conviction. He had killed another Black man earlier in the summer. His request to enter penitentiary marked possibly the first case of a Black man going unaccompanied to prison.
Ray Robinson a 17 year old white youth employed at the St Louis Brownsville and Mexico shops was oiling a machine when he was caught by the clothing and drawn into the main shaft instantly killing him.
Port Lavaca reports F S Asher arrived from Gregory with sixteen work horses and mules and rented 275 acres from McKinney Brothers to start cotton cultivation next season. He made eighty bases at Gregory this season.
The S A and A P road is making extensive improvements in Yoakum yards and shops. They are adding additional tracks and extending the sheds at the rip track by 180 feet.
In Palestine Texas a horse pulling Dr. C. S. Bratton’s buggy ran away on Monday and struck a milk wagon. The horse pulling the milk wagon was fatally injured when the buggy shaft pierced its side.
President Taft visited San Antonio as thousands lined the streets to glimpse the head of state. Crowds gathered along the route, with onlookers noting the procession and public reception across the city.
President Taft's train arrived late, yet thousands packed Sunset depot and Commerce Street to greet him. He rode in fourteen autos to the St. Anthony, amid decorated streets, guarded by Grand Army and Confederate veterans, with a warm, responsive crowd. George Lyons a local stockman sold 24 head of horses Tuesday to L A Breaux of Lockport Louisiana and the animals were immediately shipped to Lockport following the deal.
In a synchronized execution, Ferrer was put to death as soldiers fired at the same moment, finalizing the sentence.

Brownsville Texas reports San Benito cane growers will expand about 2000 acres this fall while plans form for a mutual sugar company to build a mill. The firm has contracted for 2000 tons of rice for 450 cane acres, and a mill may not operate until late next year.
Four men aboard the French military dirigible Republique were killed when the balloon suddenly burst at 500 to 600 feet during an aerial maneuver near Moulin France. Capt. Marchal Lieut. Picaure Sub-Lieuts. Vincenot and Reux perished as the envelope tore and the car fell to the ground.
