Senate bill seeks to preserve farmland by tax reform
Senator Charles Mathias of Maryland leads a measure to let farms be passed to heirs without triggering crushing estate taxes. The proposal would tax farmland by its use as farmland or open space, not speculative development value, with heirs required to keep farming or face higher taxes. Representative Marjorie Holt supports a similar House bill amid fears of food and energy shortages.
