Kensington Civil War Monument First in Connecticut
The Kensington Connecticut memorial, erected to honor six village boys who died in the Civil War, was the first soldiers’ monument of its kind in the state. Begun in 1863 amid wartime uncertainty, it was dedicated July 28, 1863, after Union victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg, and was funded by public subscription. The 50 year milestone was celebrated by the Kensington community and the Connecticut G A R.
