Givens of Sterling Colorado won the Pillsbury wheat contest at Chicago with Wichita wheat a hard red winter variety tested at 64.8 pounds per bushel Colorado has now captured four national honors since 1941 while Montana previously took one. other winners include R E Condon Ralph Osborn Appleton Brothers and William Frazen. Givens operates an 80 acre farm with hay sugar beets cattle hogs and Lena his wife raises chickens. The Wichita strain was developed at the University of Colorado agricultural experiment station.
War Assets Corporation announces no strictly agricultural equipment will be deemed surplus but tractors and trucks may be shifted to farm use. About 70 000 acres of surplus land remain for sale from an original 100 000 acres with demand outstripping supply. Fairmont Minnesota reports Ellsworth Ziemer born 1895 remains at Lake Fremont farm, C. L. Peterson born 1890 still at his birth site, but F. E. Carlson born December 1874 near Dunnell has lived on the same farm over 71 years with his wife and son.

William Franklin Knight, who witnessed six wars and knew figures like Custer Geronimo and Jesse James, died in Tulsa at age 105. Born on a steamboat in Louisiana Missouri, he moved to Texas in 1866, rode Wells Fargo west, and served as a government messenger after Comanche raids. He aged in Tulsa, retiring at 99 and living independently until a convalescent home. no immediate relatives are listed.
