Vancouver reports 112 or more killed as rock from Turtle Mountain dam burst floods valley. A rain disrupted village near Bee, Alabama is inundated and water threatens to breach a dam, risking total village destruction.
Second day of fair devoted to greetings to foreign representatives in St Louis on May 2. Weather ideal but cold and damp in the hall. Speech delivery was hindered by crowd noise, with most speakers delivering with strong voices. President Roosevelt spoke among others amid disrupted proceedings and delays.
A New York report claims Grover Cleveland’s push for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1904 is underway. The Brooklyn Eagle leads the push, with support from the New York World and influential political handlers and money interests backing Cleveland against Roosevelt.
A.M. Brandes of Monterey Mexico, long awaiting the steamboat Hannover, marries a rosy cheeked fraulein aboard and departs with her for their future home in Monterey Mexico after a Texas arrival.
In Rene Mahan Guarke & Co plans a dredge operation on the upper division of the ship channel between May 1 and 5. The dredge will begin at Morgan's Point and move toward Harrisburg while low ly division dredges have removed over 340 000 cubic yards of material and a fourth dredge is to be activated soon.
Bell County Texas appoints three girls to state industrial school via competitive exams. Superintendent Orgain names Miss Lottie I. Lloyd of Temple Miss Eloise Pricherd of Rogers and Miss Ethel Blackburn of Killen as the selected scholars.
Add Ran College of Hereford Texas charter filed in Austin. No capital stock but property holdings valued at $10 000. Purpose to build and maintain an institution of learning. Incorporators include Frank Herson G R Jewell R H Norton and S Loveless.
Mr. L. N. Roucell of the Houston and Texas Central advertising department spent yesterday here taking notes for health resort advertising to be launched this summer. Great preparations are underway for the opening carnival next week with indications of immense crowds.
A lightning bolt hit the residence of T. B. Peareson causing interior wallpaper burn and shock to the family. The nearby Methodist church steeple was damaged and all phones and electric lines were burned, leaving the town in darkness.
Three thousand men from city trade unions marched in a one mile double file procession as part of the spring carnival. It was the largest labor display ever seen in Texarkana and included all local labor organizations.
Amos Powell, brakeman on the Santa Fe local train in Clifton, sustained severe injuries Tuesday afternoon. His leg was crushed and amputated at Temple hospital, where he later died. Powell was a resident of Cleburne, Texas.
South McAlester May 5 Big financiers led by H C Frick of Pittsburg and John W Gates of Chicago plan a pool to acquire 440000 acres of Choctaw coal lands at 25 dollars per acre. Proceeds from public sale will go to Choctaws under a congressional act. Some syndicate members will develop, others hold for speculation. Frick seeks land along Fort Smith and Western railway. Gates targets eastern Choctaw lands. Gould to obtain land near South McAlester.
Washington May 5 The Chinese minister met with Secretary Hay at the state department to discuss Manchuria. Indications point to a more favorable turn in negotiations and the Russian coup being abandoned or postponed while Moscow proceeds with its Manchuria evacuation as originally planned.
Hon. James R. Marcum was shot and killed after filing papers to reopen Breathitt county election case. He fell at the Jackson courthouse entrance near town marshal James Corell who was killed in July. Marcum had been a fusion candidate ally of the Cockrell faction and was considered a marked man.
A New York letter from Panama, signed by a notable Colombian figure, says public opinion favors the canal treaty while opposition grows elsewhere. It notes Isthmian independence spirit and a push for secession if the treaty fails before Congress. Independence is argued and a later petition to join the United States is suggested. The Panama department’s geography grants near autonomy from Bogota.
Hillsboro Texas resident B Weller recalls a June frost when he was 15 that nearly killed corn to a few inches. He says his father gathered field hands to top the corn and in a day it resumed growing, yielding what he calls the best corn crop he ever saw.
A Berlin dispatch reports Princess Louise of Saxony has a newborn daughter in Lindau Bavaria. A Saxon official with a physician and nurses at Lindau has orders to bring the child to Dresden three weeks after birth.
In Orange ten miles above Leesville Louisiana the boiler at Lee and Jones' mill exploded killing Rufus Carroll and Joe Hickman. Hosie Kay and two Sanders boys were badly scalded and expected to die. Local physicians were summoned. details of the accident were not yet available.
In Big Springs Harry Jones was stabbed in the abdomen and seriously hurt. Dick Johnson is being held.
Acting Secretary of the Navy Darling notified Trigg Shipbuilding in Richmond that work on the Galveston must proceed immediately or the department will arrange completion elsewhere. The vessel was 66 percent done when Trigg faced financial troubles, and if unfinished it likely will be moved to the Norfolk navy yard for government completion.
The Venezuelan government named Dr Paul as its arbitration commission member to hear American claims. Dr Paul, a lawyer and publicist, speaks English. Robert Morris, US agent, finished preparing his case and returns to New York. He sails for Venezuela within a fortnight with thirty cases totaling $3,000,000.
John Firman a 25 year old Paterson resident possesses two hearts beating in one chest. First noted in 1898 during military enlistment examination for the Second regiment. An X ray reveals the odd heart formation doctors in Paterson have never seen before.
A blaze gutted the workshops of the Kharkoff locomotive and gun works in Russia, causing an estimated loss of 500000 dollars. No details on injuries or cause are provided.
Jacob Jackson ex secretary of state of the Indian Territory reports widespread Indian dissatisfaction over the proposed land allotment. Indians cannot judge plots and want to see and select lands themselves while expressing confusion over government plans to reserve coal lands.

In Detroit on May 4, a Grand Trunk passenger train plowed into a crowd of 1500 Polish Lancers of Toledo waiting to board homeward trains. Seven died and many were injured. authorities believe all victims were Toledo residents. Identified killed include Walter Sidwick and Frank Rosinki.
Pensacola Florida May 3 for the first time Sunday laws were enforced. Hacks livery stables soda stands and many shops were closed while only street cars and trains operated. The county solicitor said he would not enforce due to conflicting state laws. The city paper received a midnight cease notice and circulation suffered with papers arriving late. Many residents lacked meat bread and milk as work stopped at the L and N wharves causing financial losses.
An unidentified man about 50 was found murdered near Williamson Creek, six miles south of Austin, by the San Antonio road. The head was crushed with a rock and his pockets rifled, indicating robbery. He did not die on the spot but perished from injuries, and many residents viewed the body to aid identification.
In Vicksburg Mississippi Bob Bryant and Will Morris, accused of killing W H Legg, were lynched at Yazoo bridge near Haynes Bluff after a mob of about 200 farmers demanded surrender. Bryant confessed implicating Morris. Robbery motive cited. 300000 feet of lumber burned at Leggs gin house.
Consul Mansfield in Valparaiso reports a Chilean congress bill authorizes a railway across the Andes joining Buenos Aires with Santiago and Valparaiso. Argentina also advances a connecting line from Buenos Aires. Both rails push ahead and are expected to complete within a few years.

Weatherford Texas reports the death of T. W. Davis publisher of the Weatherford Republic. He had been in failing health a year and went to Colorado for improvement his body to be brought back for interment.
German landowners and agricultural experts will tour the United States starting in Washington and will stay until Tuesday. They plan to visit a fruit nursery at Martinsburg West Virginia before moving on to the West with Mr J L Schulte leading the delegation.
On the steamer Athol the first China Commercial Company ship to reach Manzanilla is due May 10 with 406 Chinese emigrants. They seek fortune in Mexico and are not under contract, signaling a future labor supply role for the company.
