Texas Adventure of Belisle Ends With Rescue
In 1719 M. de Belisle, a French officer, was abandoned by his ship near Matagorda Bay, Texas. He endured starvation, fought with wolves, learned a tribe’s language, and, aided by 10 Native auxiliaries, was rescued and taken to Natchitoches in Louisiana where he rose to major general of the marine.
