Catfish Farming Emerges as Major Texas Industry
A USDA SCS study shows Texas catfish farms sold nearly two million pounds last year from 2 282 acres of ponds. About 41 percent of producers sold at least some fish by letting customers catch them from farm ponds. Smaller farms dominate with 35 percent under five acres while 18 percent exceed twenty acres. Killough notes high growth to feed ratios make catfish popular and SCS offers a booklet on starting and running commercial catfish operations.
