Official returns from Saturdays democratic primary will be announced by the Texas Election Bureau in Dallas. Over 1,000,000 Texans voted with Governor Shivers capturing about 75 percent of the total vote. Houston is noted as the largest city in the south after a population count showed it leading New Orleans by 25,000.
The Novak family homecoming was held Saturday with a large supper at Mrs. Annie Zalman’s home featuring sausage beef and chicken barbecue and trimmings. A dance at Rehab's Hi Way Drive In followed the event. Attendees include Adolph Novak Sr and Edwin and many other relatives listed by surname in the article.
The Veterans' Ag Class of Shiner visited the Jim Thompson orchard near Moulton. Mr. Thompson guided the group through the orchard and spoke on orchard care practices.
Mr and Mrs Alvin Schraer welcomed a son named Alvin Paul born at Dr H J Strieder Hospital Moulton on Saturday July 22 at 6 15 AM The mother is the former Theresa Haas.
Five hundred thirty four voters participated in the Democratic primary in Moulton on Saturday July 22. Polls opened 8:00 A M and closed 7:00 P M with numerous candidates across offices including Governor Lt Governor Attorney General and multiple Supreme Court and state posts. Election officers listed: Erwin A. Oehl presiding judge Herman Hanslik Malvin Merrem Emil Darilek Joe Biehunko Rose Kotzebue Ivy Oehl Lydia Merrem Marie Jarosek.
John W. Doremus, head of the U S Department of Agriculture cotton classing office in Austin, urged farmers to file for free classing and market news services by August 1. About 35 percent of local ginnings were classed last year under the Smith Doxey Act, with no cost to farmers. applications go to P O Box 1140, Austin 62, Texas.
The State Highway Department announced low bids for Lavaca County road work. Killian House Co. of San Antonio bids 102,964 for Lavaca Farm Highway 531 project from Koerth to Ezzell, including grading and surface work. Luther A Turner and Son of Austin bids 173,683 for SH 295 bridges on five creeks in Lavaca Dewitt and Victoria counties.
Mr and Mrs Charles O Mi culka of Smithville visit in the home of Mr and Mrs Weldon Knape. The cordial gathering marks a social stop during their trip.
Lavaca County voters report Governor Allan Shivers with 4 273 votes while Case March 270 Mrs Lawrence 42 Forter 42 Wren 40 and others trail. Lieutenant governor tallies list Brooks 1183 Evans 437 Ramsey 767 Womack 45 and more. Long wins Sheriff race with 3729 to 1348 while Kounta? details noted for Precincts. Parents in other districts must apply for transfers to Moulton Public School before July 31. Supt. J. W. Pyland will be at the post office area in Moulton on Saturday July 29 from 9:00 A M to 6:00 P M to discuss transfers.
The Woman's Missionary Society met on July 18 with fifteen members and visitors including Rev. K Windecker. A hymn and devotional by Mrs. George von Lienen preceded a Bible Study on Hebrews led by Rev. Windecker. Luncheon was served by Mrs. John C Mueller and Mrs. Stanis Rothbauer. Next meeting August 23.
Wiley Haas and Quinton Raab of Moulton received the Lone Star Farmer's Degree at the Texas FFA State Convention in San Antonio. The honor marks the highest state award for leadership and supervised farming. The event drew about two thousand FFA members and guests, with national and international speakers contributing to the three day program.
Mrs. Wm Kuehn died at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital in Moulton on Sunday July 23 after a long illness. Funeral held July 25 at Smith Funeral Home and St Josephs Catholic Church with Rev John Matocha officiating. burial in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Survivors include husband William Kuehn a daughter Mrs Adolph Hoff man of New Braunfels and parents Mr and Mrs Fred Grohman of Weimar plus two brothers Fred Grohman Jr and John Grohman of Weimar.
Nurse Benita Schraer departed for New Orleans Louisiana following a partial vacation stay with relatives here.
The Home Demonstration Club met with Mrs. Theo Motal as hostess on Friday July 14 at 2 P M Mrs. Henry Maeker presided. The annual picnic for members families and friends will be held at Yoakum on Sunday August 6 leaving from Theo Metal home at 10 AM. Mrs Fred Wiedemann spoke on timely topics and Mrs Frank Starry demonstrated salads with dressings and serving hints. Two visitors Mrs Earl Lockwell and Mrs Eugene Biehunke attended. Reports covered the textile mills tour of New Braunfels. Refreshments were served.
Mrs. Elsie Johnson Ware formerly of Moulton died July 24 at Brackenridge Hospital Austin after a brief illness. Funeral services were held July 28 at Hylton Manor Funeral Home with Dr Edson of First Baptist Church of Austin officiating. Burial followed at Old Moulton Cemetery. Survivors include her husband B F Ware two sons Carlton and C T Johnson two sisters Mrs John Parks and Mrs S B Caldwell both of Philadelphia Mississippi two grandchildren Carleen JoAnn Johnson and Charles Johnson. She was born May 29 1883 in Freetrade Mississippi and lived in Moulton before moving to Austin about eight years ago.
Mr and Mrs Ike York return from a trip to Taft and Portland sharing remarks on the commissioners race. The brief notes their travel included discussions and observations from both cities.
The Moulton precinct convention chaired by Judge A J Darilek on July 22 adopted resolutions pledging support to President Truman and the Democratic party, backing Governor Shivers, urging unity at the county convention, backing the Korea crisis administration, supporting Texas tidelands claims, and backing Rep Clark W Thompson. Miss Ruby Marie Pavlica daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Pavlica Route 2 Gonzales and Ernest Kapavik son of Mr and Mrs Frank Kapavik West Texas were married at St James Catholic church Gonzales in a double ring ceremony Monday morning. Dinner and supper featured sausage turkey chicken and trimmings. A dance at Boeneckers Hall followed with Rudy Kurtz orchestra. Grand march led by Mr and Mrs Frank Spitzenberger. The bride a Gonzales High School graduate class of 1949 and the groom a West school graduate will reside with the bride’s parents.
Mr and Mrs Alvin Schoenfeld of Moulton are happy over the arrival of a daughter born Sunday at 10 00 AM at Dr Hugo J Strieder Hospital. The baby weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces and has been named Linda Sue. The Schoenfelds now have a boy and a girl.
The Board of Trustees of St. Joseph's Church announces the annual Catholic Church picnic to be held at the VFW Hall in Moulton on Sunday September 17.
Mrs Ad Ermis has recovered well after a surgical operation at Hallettsville Hospital and is getting along fine at home.
