Austin July 21 The automatic tax board set a state ad valorem tax rate of 72 cents on the 100 valuation, up from 37 cents. Taxes are payable October 1. The rate allocates 35 cents to general revenue, 35 cents to the available school fund, and 2 cents to the Confederate veteran pension fund. The board includes Gov Beauford H. Jester, Comptroller George Sheppard, and Treasurer Jes James.
Henry Goetz a prominent resident of Shiner died suddenly at his home Monday morning July 21 at age 73. Funeral was held at the family residence Tuesday afternoon with services in the Lutheran Church interment followed in Shiner City Cemetery Rev Oehlke officiating.

The Moulton Softball League hosted by the Lions Club saw last Thursday's Legion defeat the Sodality 4 to 3 and the Cattlemen crush the PTA 27 to 7. Tuesday's Evergreen and Ko mensky teams played to a 15 15 draw while the VFW defeated the Lions 15 to 7.
Mrs. W. H. Sandwich of Corsicana Texas is among five nurses from a 17 state area chosen for the Teacher Training Course in Red Cross home nursing at the University of Minnesota from July 29 to August 29. She is the daughter of Mrs. Theo Schriber of San Antonio formerly of Texas.
Governor Jester calls a special election in the Ninth congressional district to fill the seat left by the long serving Congressman J. J. Mansfield who died in office. The vote will be held Saturday August 23.
Johnnie Holub of Moulton made the Baldwin Business College honor roll in Yoakum for the past six weeks. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Joe Holub. The Metal family returned from a vacation in Houston Marlin and Smithville.

MSgt. John Lewis Jaeggli is spending a week at the home of his father J. T. Jaeggli at Lowry Field Colorado and visiting other relatives during a temporary absence from duty.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jarosek and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Freytag were in San Antonio Tuesday. Mr. W. L. Gibson and family attended funeral services for a relative in Houston this week.

The Lavaca County ACA office in Hallettsville announced that USDA instructions have resumed 1947 program activities. Farmers seeking ACA compensation must contact the local office for prior approvals before starting production practices, with many missing assistance since May 26.
Dr Edwin R Zorcek 31 killed instantly and Jim Kania 38 of Houston fatally injured in a La Grange area plane crash Sunday afternoon. Kania died at hospital Monday. The two seated plane spun and crashed in a field. Dr Zorcek buried in LaGrange new cemetery Monday with Rev S A Zientek officiating. He is survived by wife parents two sisters and four brothers.
Mr Kana was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Houston with Rev. Edward J Jansky presiding. He leaves a wife and children Frances and Jimmie Joe, three sisters Mrs John Holan of San Antonio Fayetteville and Mrs John Cernoch of La Grange, five brothers Frank Emil George Jerry La Grange and August Yoa Kum, and his parents Mr and Mrs John Kana of La Grange.
The Moulton Home Demonstration Club will meet at the Home Economics Cottage on Wednesday July 30 to discuss the fair exhibit and plan the August picnic. All members are urged to be present.

The Gonzales Lions defeated the visiting Moulton Lions 8 to 7 in a close game. Gonzales suffered two injuries as De Willis Crews broke bones in his left leg and Fred Scheske Jr. sprained an ankle while sliding into second base. The Gonzales team intends to replay the game at a later date.
The Women's Missionary Society held a Wednesday afternoon meeting with president Mrs. K. Windecker presiding. Rev. Windecker led scripture and prayer and discussed the Golden Rule topic. Miss Rose Svoboda read an interview between Dr. Vincent Peale and Roland Hayes.
