Tax Rate Upped To 72c on $100

Austin July 21 The automatic tax board set a state ad valorem tax rate of 72 cents on the 100 valuation, up from 37 cents. Taxes are payable October 1. The rate allocates 35 cents to general revenue, 35 cents to the available school fund, and 2 cents to the Confederate veteran pension fund. The board includes Gov Beauford H. Jester, Comptroller George Sheppard, and Treasurer Jes James.

Henry Goetz 73 Dies at Shiner

Henry Goetz a prominent resident of Shiner died suddenly at his home Monday morning July 21 at age 73. Funeral was held at the family residence Tuesday afternoon with services in the Lutheran Church interment followed in Shiner City Cemetery Rev Oehlke officiating.

Plane Crash Takes Two LaGrange Men

Dr Edwin R Zorcek 31 killed instantly and Jim Kania 38 of Houston fatally injured in a La Grange area plane crash Sunday afternoon. Kania died at hospital Monday. The two seated plane spun and crashed in a field. Dr Zorcek buried in LaGrange new cemetery Monday with Rev S A Zientek officiating. He is survived by wife parents two sisters and four brothers.

Forest Oil No. 1 Obergoner wildcat two miles north of Hallettsville Lavaca County is complete and flows gas at 40 000 000 cubic feet per day from perforations at 7510 16 feet. Total depth 9001 feet casing set at 8375 feet. Drill stem tests at 7924 32 feet yield 280 feet of 39 9 gravity oil and 165 feet of oil and mud. No nearby production.

Gonzales Lions Edge Moulton Lions 8 7 in Baseball

The Gonzales Lions defeated the visiting Moulton Lions 8 to 7 in a close game. Gonzales suffered two injuries as De Willis Crews broke bones in his left leg and Fred Scheske Jr. sprained an ankle while sliding into second base. The Gonzales team intends to replay the game at a later date.
