Pittsburg reports the Amalgamated Association strike order largely followed with thirty four thousand workers idle. Workmen expect a quick settlement and have a sizable strike fund. In St Petersburg famine fears rise as rains fail across eastern provinces.
Reports from the weather bureau describe prolonged hot weather across nineteen states and territories. Crops suffer variably from Texas to Nebraska with heavy damage in Kansas Missouri Arkansas and parts of Illinois Kentucky and Tennessee while Ohio Valley corn remains largely uninjured. Winter wheat harvests wrap in Kansas Missouri and lower Ohio Valley.
Pittsburgh July 17 The second strike day shows Amalgamated officials in a satisfied mood claiming promises kept while manufacturers refuse comment. Clark mill and Monessen sheet mill closings hint at a near three-firm tie up. non union National Tube workers gain wage boosts sparking union demands.
New York’s wheat and corn pits saw one of the year’s largest totals with prices jumping up to 25 8 cents, as bulls ride by farmer demand. Western heat and rain delays threaten the corn crop while wheat rallied with the bulls, sending chatter of 60 cent corn in Chicago.
Robert Franklin Victory, 22, son of Charles H. Victory, was killed at the Lima Lumber Co. mill in Livingston Texas when he became fastened to a shaft while wheeling sawdust. He made about 150 revolutions before his death with both feet torn off near the knees and both arms crushed. Local authorities reported the gruesome accident occurred about 7 o clock yesterday morning.
A Fort Scott jury of prominent businessmen ruled the state inebriate law unconstitutional in four minutes. Dan F. Campbell refused to testify when summoned by county attorneys and was arrested, but the jury acquitted him.
Two Mexican fandangos near Elmendorf and Birds Mill end with two dead and two fatally wounded. Manuel Perez killed by Juan Garcia at Elmendorf. Antonio Salvez killed and Santos Hernandez and Jesus Cantor fatally wounded by Manuel Breda near San Juan mission. Breda arrested. Austin district court suit seeks 3000 damages against a Chinese restaurant for alleged illness from meals.
A southbound Santa Fe passenger train encountered a cyclone near Valley Mills Texas just before noon yesterday. The train halted as the storm hit, causing house damage and injuries to three or four people. Mrs Charles Murdock of this city reported her narrow escape to her husband. One young woman was stripped of her clothing.
San Antonio experienced a blistering heat wave with 101 degrees in the shade. The city saw deserted streets from morning till evening and a 44 year old man named Frank Couch died after being overwhelmed. he collapsed at 5 pm and died ten minutes later.
Ennis Texas reported a three day event ending with immense attendance both day and night. Organizers called the Ennis Street Fair and Flower Carnival a grand success as crowds filled the streets until 1 30 this morning.
A cloudburst in Western Michigan caused massive damage to railroads bridges and crops with many lines washed out and communities affected near Grand Rapids and surrounding areas.
The McKinley proclamation putting the Creek treaty into effect was received by Chief Porter in Muskogee. The accord allows Creek Indians to sell land to whites and grant title to town lots, with 5,000,000 acres of fertile land and a surge of settlers expected. The Muskogee townsite commission was reestablished and work resumed.
Indianapolis July 9 The grand jury opened sensational testimony about an alleged Indianapolis insanity trust. Doctors and officials are accused of conducting hundreds of insanity inquests over two years and collecting large sums. Dr W R Fletcher says about one fifth of asylum inmates are sane. Indictments are expected.
Fort Worth Texas July 13. The strike situation improved as painters opened compromise talks and may return to work for 3 dollars. Master painters to consider Tuesday. Plumbers quit but then returned, backing the arbitration board’s unskilled labor scale. Building work remains halted.
Special dispatch from Capetown reports Scheeper’s Boer command entering Murraysburg Cape Colony and burning all public buildings and residences. The town is not garrisoned.
Syracuse attorney Frederick D. White son of Ambassador Andrew D. White died by his own hand after suffering neurasthenia. The death details note mental illness as the cause and place the event in Syracuse New York.
