Government funds grant study tennis etiquette sparks outrage
Sen. William Proxmire denounces a federal grant to study tennis court etiquette as a misuse of taxpayer money. The $ funding originated with the National Endowment for the Humanities and flowed through the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities to Arlington County for sociological surveys and public meetings on players’ attitudes. The NEH spokesman claimed the grant was issued by the Virginia foundation, not NEH directly, but Proxmire argues NEH permits broad state use of funds.
