Review of the 1956 Texas agriculture year
A backward look at 1956 crop year shows drought and high costs reducing farm income despite bumper crops in some commodities. Cotton led cash value, with total Texas principal crops around 1.1 billion dollars, nine percent below last year and the 10 year average. Irrigation boosted results in sorghum while dryland yields lagged. Production costs rose, with interest and taxes climbing, and farmers hope 1957 ends the seven year drought to improve balance with the national economy.
