Forage vs grain: steer calf management study findings

Texas A and M research compared Santa Gertrudis steers kept on grass, grain on grass, or drylot. Grain fed steers reached slaughter weight and higher USDA grade sooner but yielded fewer prime cuts. Forage finishing with 98 days feeding produced more protein than grain fed programs. Forage finished beef appears feasible but may limit total beef flow to U.S. consumers.
