IRS says 1977 changes simplify filing with new tax tables and a flat zero bracket amount. Most taxpayers go straight to tables after adjusted gross income. Itemizers face two subtraction steps before table use. For many, fewer lines on Form 1040A.
America moves for work as millions relocate yearly. The new law lowers the distance requirement to 35 miles and sets work weeks thresholds of 39 weeks (or 78 for self employed) while expanding deductions for pre moving expenses to 1500 dollars and buying selling costs to 3000 dollars.

Employers will no longer provide employee lists on Form 941 and will only report total income tax withheld. Quarterly Social Security earnings data will move to annual Form W-2 submissions, with new 941 and W-2 forms issued by year’s end 1977.
