For seventy four years the McPhail Pianos made in Boston have maintained a high standard. They are artistic instruments in competition with the world’s best and have won many medals and diplomas. Over 20 000 have been sold to Boston and surrounding musical people.
The Commercial Club of Brownwood will award one thousand dollars in prizes to farmers in the Brownwood trade territory who diversify their crops beyond cotton. The Texas Channel and Docks Company has awarded the contract for a nine hundred foot wharf and warehouse on Harbor Island inside Port Arthur. The new structure will be concrete and fireproof.
General Sam Houston is praised as a model of strength and leadership whose presence provokes admiration. The passage urges future Texas leaders across government, industry, philosophy, art, science and literature to live powerfully and inspire lasting progress for the Southland.

Hallettsville Texas February 14 Professor William Seilers county superintendent of schools has perfected a reporting system for county teachers. It requires monthly pupil exam results grade averages and school building conditions. It aims to help trustees and patrons and to improve rural schools overall.
Austin Texas February 16 Texas highway mileage is about 140000 with 37500 miles improved and 6500 miles of high grade. Construction varies by local materials best suited to conditions shell gravel macadam sand clay and crushed rock. Many other roads remain passable year round under natural conditions.
The Texas Midcoast Industrial Congress meets at Angels on March 7 1912. Reports will be submitted and new officers elected with influential speakers from state work. The Angelton Commercial Club plans entertainment and invites county commissioners city councils and clubs to participate.
Several residents attended the leap year dance at Novohrad on Saturday night and reported a fine time. Mr. Henry Moeller and wife visited here last Wednesday. Prof. F Joe Butschek and son Frank of Oak Grove were here last Sunday. Emil Schmidt Fred Batachek and Otto Krause of Moulton were here Sunday. Albert Dittmar spent weekend with Shiner home folks. Joe Richter and family of Schulenburg passed through last week. George Kaiser and family of Old Moulton visited Fisbeck family Sunday.
Much confusion and expense will result as districts fail to form under law. They must be resurveyed, risking boundary rearrangements and shifting of pupils. The attorney general sometimes rejects district bonds for this reason. Law requires districts to be at least six square miles with definite boundary descriptions.
Mrs Chas Pfaender of Washington visits relatives in Shiner. Mrs Hirsch of Henkhaus shopped in the city. A birthday surprise for Mr Ponton featured five hundred and other games, with a salad course and coffee. Guests included H Dryer, C Welhausen, Joe Hughes, and many more. A T C Club gathering, Yoakam and Fla tonia visits noted. K P Lodge hosted Pythian Sisters with an oyster supper and musical selections. Prof J Ponton spoke at a memorable Lodge event. The Lavaca County Medical Society met in Yoakum on February 13 to read and report on meningitis cases. Dr. J. E. Lay Hallettsville and Dr. Shropshire Yoakum read papers on cerebrospinal meningitis, with Drs. Walker and Shropshire reporting recent cases.
George W. P. Hunt, a Democrat, was inaugurated as governor of Arizona on February 14. The ceremony marked his assuming office and setting the course for the new administration.
President Taft signs the proclamation admitting Arizona as the forty eighth state joining the Union, bringing total number of states to forty eight.

A county superintendent urges teachers to comply with attendance regulations for local teachers institutes and to send examination reports and papers promptly. He notes weather caused a postponement of a county board meeting and asks for reports on school property and examinations. He invites names for the Boys Corn Club.
The First State Bank of Moulton Texas organized in 1905 with 25000 capital. In 1907 capital rose to 35000 and at a February 15 1912 shareholders meeting it increased to 50000. Directors and officers push stronger protections for depositors via higher bond coverage and deposit safeguards.
The commissioners court yesterday increased the county judge's pay from 600 to 900 per year. Citizens had petitioned for 1200, but the court deemed 900 sufficient. Officials note that office fees have fallen so much the post now ceases to be refuge for income.
