Plan Swindled Out of $5,000 in Hallettsville
Hallettsville resident Victor Steffek Sr. fell victim Friday morning to a gambling swindle in a market parking lot. Two men, one black and one white, lured him with a fake $35,000 windfall and demanded $5,000. After a staged poker hand, the “winner” wrapped money in tissue and locked it in Steffek’s glove box, then disappeared with the key and the funds. The missing cash remains unrecovered.
