Depreciation on Livestock for Farm and Ranch Firms
Livestock depreciation is allowable for breeding or dairy animals used in the business. Bates notes operators often overlook depreciation on livestock, which can exceed salvage value and grow with higher animal costs, especially for purchases in 1958 and 1959. He cites a 10 cow example: $225 each, six year life, $75 salvage, $150 depreciation per animal over six years, or $250 annually for all ten, if claimed yearly.
