The Flag Nation’s History From Betsy Ross to Flag Day
A compact history of American flags from colonial banners to the first national flag and Betsy Ross. It notes prior flags used in the Revolution, the Pine Tree flag, Rattle Snake banner, and the design changes urged by Congress in 1777. It cites Betsy Ross with Washington and the 1818 state-star provision, and explains flag colors symbolism. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14, linked to the flag’s birth in Philadelphia at Betsy Ross’s house.
