State police report Texas 1937 traffic toll the worst in state history with 2,043 deaths in twelve months. Nearly all crashes could have been avoided with caution. Injury list at 16,183, 2,684 pedestrians struck, 529 fatally. 897 within cities, 1,124 on open highways.
John F. Lubben longtime A H Belo Corp secretary treasurer and Galveston native died in Dallas Sunday after a lingering illness. Funeral Monday at Holy Trinity Church with burial at Calvary Hill. Surviving widow two sons Dr John F. Lubben Jr and Joseph A Lubben of Dallas a daughter Mrs Edward F Leeper of Dallas two brothers Frank and Will Lubben of Galveston.
On Friday night February 11 at 7 30 oclock the Moulton Parent-Teacher Association will entertain with a Valentine bridge and forty-two party in the high school auditorium. Entertainment for the children will be provided and refreshments served. Join in the fun and support the PTA.

Coke Stevenson of Junction former speaker of the house announced his bid for lieutenant governor on Saturday. He previously served as a state representative and now seeks the second highest statewide office at the upcoming election.
The Moulton High School Band and the Glee Club under Grady Whittle will attend a music festival in Victoria on Saturday February 12. Dozens of school bands and glee clubs from South Texas will perform, promising a day filled with music and song.
Gonzales Texas January 29 reports a key rate cut to 22 cents effective February 1 after the State Fire Insurance Commission reduced the rate from 26 cents. The 4 cent decrease lowers fire insurance costs for residents and businesses in Gonzales.
The regular meeting of the Moulton Volunteer Fire Department will be held at the American Legion Hall Monday night February 7 beginning at 730. Show your interest in the fire department by attending its meetings.
Large family gathering at the home of Mr and Mrs H B Moeller near Old Moulton marked their golden wedding anniversary. A plentiful dinner and lunch were served as friends wished the couple many more happy years. The Eagle joins in congratulations.
Miss Dorothy Jean Jaeggli, Arnold Papacek, Boyce Rehmet, Kenward Kolar, Emil Darilek and Frank Kokas of Austin spent the week end here with home folk.
D. L. Hudson and Wilbert Randon from the county agricultural department of Hallettsville were in town Saturday on business. Hudson also traveled to A. & M. College Thursday to discuss the cotton program.
Between fifty and sixty Kamensky residents attended a schoolhouse good roads meeting with Johnnie Fishbeck Ed Nevosa d and County Commissioner Arnold Freytag present. A straw vote favored bond issue 21 to 10. Local committees were named: W H J Wenske Adolph Mikulik Tom Bohuslav and later Winken waerder Willie Gertner Peter Machart with Freytag in attendance.
The Tuesday night gathering at Oak Grove schoolhouse drew 64 residents. County Commissioner Arnold Freytag attended with the Moulton Business Men's League committee led by R. B. Papacek and members Rud Jahn and Henry Fehrenkamp. A straw vote showed 17 in favor of bonds and 19 against. The article lists Jim Sustr Jim Hoepfl and Albert Krejci among attendees.
Government report shows 26826 bales ginned in Lavaca County from the 1937 crop before January 16, 1938, versus 8604 bales for 1936. Information furnished to The Eagle by Henry J. Strauss, special agent, Hallettsville.
Cage Bros and L A Turner win a contract for 1.3 miles of road including a modern bridge over Peach creek about seven miles east of Gonzales on Highway 200 and two relief bridges. The $117,401 project should start within six weeks.
The stork visited Mr. and Mrs. W B Ryan of Houston on January 25 delivering a bouncing boy weighing 10 pounds 4 ounces. Named William Bernard Jr the infant fills the family with joy. Mrs Ryan is formerly Mrs Violet Wagner of Houlton. The Hagle offers congratulations.
County Agricultural Agent G A King reports that Lavaca County AAA work brought in 46206 dollars and 63 cents in 1987 from all AAA programs.
Mrs. Mary Krepper died at 76 with 1 month and 16 days. Funeral from her home then St. Joseph's Church officiated by Rev. Joseph Kopp. Interment in Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers Adolph Boehm Eddie Liebischer Joe Ducho John Ducho Frank Ducho Jim Rosenauer. Survived by step son Joe Krepper and sister Mrs Barbara Ducho.
Lavaca county high school pupils will survey family driving patterns for the Texas State Highway Department. Under guidance of field instructors O. T. Lodal and S. M. Callaway, students interview parents about trips and road types to aid a statewide highway plan.
Born to Mr and Mrs Charles Kubenka near Moulton January 25 a boy Leroy. Born to Mr and Mrs Rudy Hoheneee near Moulton January 28 a girl Dorothy Willimena. Born to Mr and Mrs Louis Pietsch of Moulton February 1 a boy Kenny Louis. The Eagle congratulates the happy parents.
Stockholders of the Moulton Waterworks Company met at City Hall with President Vladik Boehm presiding and Victor O Fehrenkamp at the desk. Minutes were approved, reports submitted and accepted, and a motion to sell holdings to the City of Moulton was approved. Directors and officers were re elected.
Emil Pesek 50 a Yoakum resident died suddenly at Weimar while on business. Born in Praha he moved to Yoakum 26 years ago and worked in a bank before entering insurance. He was active in politics and campaigned for Mansfield. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Church with Rev. Beck officiating. interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Survived by widow Annie Benys Pesek a daughter Anita a son Leon four brothers and six sisters. The Eagle extends sympathy to the family.
The home of Mr and Mrs Alfons Kresta in Komensky was destroyed by a Wednesday fire causing total loss of possessions. The origin is unknown and the couple were away at the time of the blaze.
Yates M Hill son of Mr and Mrs Scott Hill of this city has been appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point by Congressman J J Mansfield of Columbus.
The Texas Alliance of Czech Catholics met at St. Joseph's Hall in Moulton on Sunday afternoon with Father Paul Kasper presiding. Delegations from LaGrange Hostyn Praha Flatonia Shiner Moravia Wied Hallettsville and Moulton attended as speakers included Senator L J Sulak County Clerk J F Boska Walter Malee Msgr L P Netardus Father J Pustka and Hon B P Matocha. Hallettsville selected as next meeting site.
Mrs Richard Freeze died at her home near Peach Creek Sunday night January 28 after a several months long illness. Burial was at Saturn on Tuesday. Surviving are her husband two children Mrs Chas Foster and Oscar Freeze and a sister Mrs Lola Johnson of Houston.

The Moulton Boy Scouts sponsor a fat and lean basketball game and a match between Moulton and Haletisville Boy Scout troops at Herman Park on Wednesday February 9 starting at 7 30. Everyone should come out to support this worthy organization.
